Thanks Al,
I throw in a Quick Draw McGraw reference when I want to sound falutin' (highfalutin' might be an over statement.) c.mcbrian, You bring up a good point and one I struggle with. There is a lot of Hyperbole in advertising, I get that, but there has been so much escalation in the language used on websites that if one doesn't make extravagant claims of some sort the site seems tepid. At some point we all seem like Humpty Dumpty making words mean what we want them to mean. I don't have an answer and frankly my website does come off a little Bland. I have a Great Show but great is not big enough now days. I just don't want to make ridiculous, over the top, claims (that no one could live up to) and arrive at the show with my pants on fire. I have a Satisfaction Guarantee but how can that compete with Manic, Chaotic Mayhem? - Mary Mowder |

Mary, I tried a Google search, and it turned up lots of stuff about you, but I couldn't easily find your website. You shouldn't need to make extravagant claims to sell your shows. But, it's important to find the right words, to attract potential customers.
My show is one that might get sold using the terms "manic", "choaotic" and "mayhem". But, really, even I don't push that side of it all too much. I prefer to mention "high energy" and "non-stop action". If your shows are a little more demure, there is no reason to think you can't still find a great big market. You simply reverse the message - that you WON'T have all the kids in a frenzy, and they will still have a fabulous time. After all, kids don't NEED to be hyper to have a good time. There are plenty of parents who wouldn't particularly relish the thought of a manic party with 15 kids rampaging around their living room. Though, I think it would be fair to say that most parents' perception is that when kids are manic and hyper together, they are DEFINITELY enjoying themselves. This really comes down to control. Can you control the kids? If so, then how excitable do you allow them (or encourage them) to be, before you start to "bring them down"? I have to admit, I can easily get the kids to warp factor 9, and then heaven knows how I'm able to carry on. My strategy is a "start-stop" method. I start something, create chaos, then stop it. Bring everything back to peaceful and quiet.....and then create chaos again. Sure, there are plenty of riotous moments, but there are just as many times when I whisper, and bring all the energy down. Mary,
It's "McBrien" not "McBrian"...Meeeeeooooowwwww (puts nose in air). (My wife keeps telling me I actually love cats, because my temperament is just like them...I think she just wants us to adopt a cat) My example was a little over the top...really for effect. At some point, though, you DO have to really sell the client...whatever words are on your site, they need to sell you and take away doubts of the client. I agree with many of your points, though....here's an example of what would make a client run for the hills: "The Most Amazing Magic Show In The World! BAR NONE! Mary Will Amaze You With Her World Class, Mayhem Inducing, Jaw Dropping, Side Splitting, Award Winning Comedy Magic Skills That Will Have You Asking: Is This Even Real, Is This An Alien Abduction Or Did She Slip Something In My Drink?" I put your name in there, hopefully it made you laugh. If you put anyone's name in that, it would make a client worry! Al, Here's the best one you could ever use. "Al Capone"...you KNOW people would call you!!!!
