I think the key phrase is your post was "may be".
Looking at something with an open mind does not meen the brain is missing. My belief is that the trust that used to be involved in such testing and the belief that people were coming for honest testing, not to commit fraud and or attempt to discredit others is gone. It is replaced with the cold reality that people are liars, frauds, and thieves and will do just anything for self advancement and profiteering. My opinion, of course. |

Really nice presentation. I liked how you kept moving the ball downfield. It kept the suspense building and offered several layers that could not be unraveled later.

Good question! I always tell my kids to never open with a pronoun and there I go being a hypocrite. I was referring to Mark's mentalism that I watched in his Youtube link. Thank you, I will work on being less vague when talking about him, them and those other things over there next to that do-hickey. |

On 2010-10-20 16:10, Tony Iacoviello wrote: I qualified my comment by the term "may be" to avoid the implication that ALL parapsychologists are equally prone to the kind of deception under discussion. Nevertheless, there is ample evidence (based on the study of cognitive psychology) to support the contention that people, even scientists who strive to remain objective and keep an open mind, are prone to seek confirmation rather than falsification of their favored hypotheses and thus can fall prey to deceptions designed to take advantage of that mindset. It is apparent that you and I (and you are hardly the only one) view Project Alpha from different perspectives . . . and that is NOT meant to suggest that either of us is necessarily "right" or "wrong," just that we take different lessons from the experience. In my case the lessons are that no one is too smart to be fooled, that expertise in one area does not necessarily bestow equal expertise in others, and that we all have a tendency to see what we want to believe and are prone to ignore (and avoid seeking) evidence that we may be wrong with the result that we are all potential victims of a clever deceiver . . . something that magicians have known for centuries and that is now being confirmed by recent studies in neuroscience and taken seriously by scientists in that and related fields. History is replete with examples that support that premise which, BTW has been the underlying message of my tradecraft presentation on principles of deception that has been part of the training program for analysts at our national intelligence agencies since 1992.

On one upside...nice video
on the other side...is it really that difficult to fool a parapsychologist? |

Haha nice one Richard
It's funny how easy it is isn't it. They SO want to believe that they really are very gullible (on the whole). In fact I gently advised these guys to consult trained magicians whenever they were feeling convinced by something strange, suggesting to them that is really is very easy to mimick the paranormal (though, I do nto rule out the possibility of paranormal activity myself!).
