My Ring Flight went through both the wash and dry cycles. The leather case is no worse for the cleansing, but the thread broke and wound up inside the reel.
Is there anyone out there who can repair reels? I just need to get that fixed so I can replace it back in the key case. I contacted Paul Diamond who was the only person I knew who repaired reels, but his eyesight is shot and he can no longer see well enough to do any of this intricate work. BTW, aside from Paul's failing eyesight his hearing is staring to go but he says everything else is working like a young man. I know he misses seeing all of his old friends. Thanks.

Try doing it yourself. It's not that hard... just go slow.

Just attach more line then needed and pull out until you get the tension you want.
A lot depends on the type of reel you have installed in your Ring Flight. There are not so many different types, it is hard to know exactly what to suggest. Does your version have a commercial name? Or could you send it back to the original manufacturer to get repaired? I have made several Ring Flites and fixed many reels, it is not difficult, just try to keep the spring in the housing. |

Bring it to the next meeting. Member dsalley here on the Café does a really good job of repairing reels.

Thanks to all who have responded here. I have had this Ring Flight for over 20 years and I guess it was only a matter of time. Although I don't think it's time was now. I think it would have lasted longer had I not drowned it in the washing machine. So, I don't have any recollection who the manufacturer was. When I looked at the reel, I can see that it is not one of Paul Diamond's brass reels. It is more of a shiny tin reel.
Anyway, the environments I work (cocktail parties) do not require that the reel be silent. Only that it is reliable with any size and weight of ring. I have used heavy Super Bowl rings with this reel in the past with no problem. So, I bought a cheap reel from Office Max (for name badge holders) and attached it. I have tried several weights of rings and it seems to work fine. I really don't care that the line is black either. They never see the line so it doesn't have to be cat gut or steel wire or anything. Bill, I will bring the reel to the meeting at your suggestion. Herb Jacobs also offered to look at it. If either of you can fix it, then fine. If not, then no worries. I've got a "work around" that does the trick (pun intended). yours, Scott

20 years and you never broke the string...WOW...Wish I could say that, The Ring Flight reel is not hard to fix or reload with string. I think if you open it up and look at it you'll see that it's not "Rocket Science", Like Pete said just go slow...

I had a Bell and Howell Foton 35mm spring wound motorized still camera. One day it stopped working. I unscrewed the base to see if I could fix it.
KAPOW.... A TEN FOOT SPRING FLEW OUT ALONG WITH SEVERAL PIECES. I gathered everything up and shipped it with a note, saying, "I promise I will never try to fix a camera again." The factory put it all back together at no cost. I didn't realize the camera was GUARANTEED FOR LIFE.

Hi Scott, as you've had your ring flight for over 20 years why not invest in a Ring flight revolution from Dave Bonsall. This is the biz and I'm confident it will see you another 20 years......
