I'm still new to this real Winter stuff and last year my pipes froze which was a real pain. I need to wrap my pipes or something and I've been told that the freezing happens where the pipes go into the ground. Do I wrap a blanket around it with tape at that point or something or do I need more than that? I've also been told when it freezes at night I need to keep water running in the sink. Any tips out there? I'm totally out of my world with this snow and freezing crap.

You need to keep a very small trickle of water coming out of at least one pipe when the temp is going to freeze.
It happened to me once and I had to put a heater in the basement, pointed at the spot where the water main comes out of the ground. Good luck. I hate Winter. I'd rather sweat than shiver.

Check any pipes that run along outside walls, and insulate them. Under kitchen sinks is one such place to look.
You can buy lengths of foam insulation tubing that are split down the middle. Just pop them over the pipes. It's pretty cheap stuff, assuming your local hardware store has it in stock. Also, if you have a crawl space under your house that has exposed pipes, they can also be subject to freezing. Rule of thumb... the more exposed to the outside temps, the higher the risk of pipes freezing. Check outside spigots, and where possible, cut off the water at a valve that is inside the house. Wrap the spigot to insulate it. They make styrofoam domes that fit over these, but an old bath towel tied with some cord does just fine. The dripping water is a time honored method to keep pipes from freezing. Moving water does not freeze as quickly as standing water.

Listen to Michael. Where are your pipes? You're going to have to insulate them somehow, and how you do it depends on where they are.
(In reality, those of us with "real winter" don't have that problem because our homes are designed to prevent freeze-ups.) John

Magnus said what I was going to say, which was in 10 years in Wisconsin and 3 in New England I've never had this problem.
In general if your house is properly built for the weather then as long as your furnace keeps working this shouldn't happen. Note that lawn sprinklers are a different animal. You need to shut off the water to them and then get a sprinkler service in who will use pressurized air to blow the remaining water out. If your house was NOT properly built for your region then it is probably breaking local construction codes and I'd get a reliable contractor in to look for all possible problems.

The house has a crawl space not on a slab, it is an old house. The water main goes up from the ground then into the house. Idiots built the system.

Would it be easy to put a bit of insulation inside the crawl space walls? If not, the insulating the pipes may be sufficient.

Well, your first problem is, you live at the north pole. I'm surprised this is something new to you.
