" There is no automatic infection because users are alerted via the standard Mac OS X Java security alert."
What good would more virus protection do for someone who ignores the warnings? |

Koobface' spreads by sending a message to people's inboxes, pretending to be from a Facebook friend. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1821061 How many people do you know who automatcially click "Install Flash Player"?? A good virus scanner would warn you that it isn't what it claims to be and would stop it installing if you did click on it. But that's missing the real issue. The real issue is that, as I predicted, virus and Trojan authors are starting to *specifically* target Macs. This is just the first detected example.

I never just click ok, or install when I get pop ups.
Now, I haven't read up on this yet, so is it something that attaches to something you intentionally click on with the intention of installing flash or something? Like, you go to play a game, and it says you need an update and the virus comes with it?

Yes they are. And even though the virus doesn't work once it installs, it does show they are trying. My experience is the nice thing about Macs is only Apple should be sending you updates. Java updates should come from Mac. Now when they can imitate that there will be chaos in MacLand.

Similarly, if I ever get a pop up saying I need additional codecs/software/updates or what ever to pay/use something, then I will generally seek out said updates etc from the source for he program in question.

Basically it tells you a friend sent you a video to view and, when you click on the video, it tells you you need a "Flash Player Upgrade" that is really the malware. Technically this makes it a trojan, rather then a virus, but that's a fine point of interest only to security experts and malware writers.

Very informative thread explaining why this current Koobface Trojan doesn't work on OS X. It is still a Windows based Trojan, arrives as an .exe file which is useless to OS X unless you are running windows based software, which some people are doing now at times on their Macs. Some time ago every half awake PC user was warned to NEVER download an .exe file without scanning it. To say they are specifically targeting Macs is misleading. They are specifically targeting Windows based software. It should surprise no one that inviting a stray dog into your house or Mac is also inviting his fleas, his viruses, and other diseases. Quote:

Hm.
There appear to be conflicting reports. Quote:
These files include elements designed to infect Mac OS X, Windows and Linux. The Java applet should also download an installer that will then launch and attempt to install the malware. While Intego has evidence of several infections in the wild, we are not currently able to go beyond this step, as either the malicious malware has bugs preventing it from running correctly, or the servers it contacts are not active or are not serving the correct files. and Quote:
The company rates the threat as “low” because the current Mac OS X implementation is flawed but warned Mac OS X users that the malicious hackers behind Koobface is now tinkering with a Mac version to expand the base of victims. I wonder if people are confusing two different versions of the same attack. In any event, I still believe this is the thin edge of the wedge. OSX users have enjoyed a relatively untargeted existence up til now due to their small numbers. Along with the success of mac laptops and the growing importance of mac desktops comes an increase in the likelyhood of attack.

Quote: Really, because in my experience virus protection does not check for trojans. Which would make the difference of importance to every PC user.

Not a Chrome user. And again, Koobface does not affect OS X. It only affects Windows based software. Warning should be most of interest to Mac users running Windows based software.

Multiple sites say this is a "Koobface-like" virus targeting OSX specifically. I thin kthe confusion here is that "Koobface" only targets Windows, but this isn't Koobface. Its a Koobface clone for OSX. Anyway that's what I'm synthesizing from everything I have read. It IS unclear at this juncture.

Intego has discovered a Mac version of the Koobface worm, which spreads via social networks such as Facebook, MySpace and Twitter. Intego’s Virus Monitoring Center has been examining this malware for some time, and given the low level of risk, has not publicly issued information about it. Since other reports have been made public about this malware, Intego has decided to publish this security memo. http://www.intego.com/news/trojan-horse-......os-x.asp

Ha! Awesome. Interestingly enough, what killed my PC (for me at least) was the virus software itself. The thing ran so slowly due to that, I finally gave up and moved the important files to an external drive. I decided I'd rather let some virus destroy the computer than wait 12 minutes for it to start up and run all of the necessary scans and other garbage so it could crawl along without the fear of being hacked. It was like living in a house where the motion censors are active 24 hours a day, and if you even think about moving, the whole system goes off. I gave up, moved outta that house and bought a Mac.
