Anyone used Momemto is it as clean as the video?
http://www.davidregal.com/memento.html I had an idea ages ago leaving a real momento with a client. Would it be possible to leave a real playing card in a clear plastic block? Might use a different method but I have a great presentation for it. |

I had been looking forward to this but I was a bit disappointed to be honest when I saw the video. The method is a bit too obvious so I decided to pass. Here is what I do now...
1) Show a clear and empty acrylic block, let spectator examine it and return it to it's little plain card box. I offer it to a spectator to hold and as an 'afterthought' go to my pockets saying - 'we'll need' - as I say this I deck switch the block switching in a block in card case with a force card encased in it - 'a deck of cards' producing a pack of cards from other pocket. 2) I Pass the block (in its box) casually to the spectator immediately uncasing the deck of cards and pointing out the names of the cards asking - 'do you know all the names of the playing cards?' and other such waffle before forcing (use your preferred weapon of choice here) the same card as in the block. Once selected I hand them the rest of the cards and ask them to mix it into the deck and recase the deck. 3) Get card drawing spectator to retrieve the block from whoever is holding it (or from their pocket if it's just me and them) and hold it on their palm face up. 4) Lay the deck on top of the block on their palm and get them to visualise their card( which they believe only they know the name of) melting through each card in the deck, dropping down one by one and to let me know when 'they feel the resistance of the block' indicated by 'a slight pressure sensation in the frontal lobe of the brain' This seems to elicit a response especially when I press them saying 'you can feel it can't you?' (nobody likes to not be able to do things). I encourage them to 'push on, push the card down deeper' etc. When I think it has been milked enough I ask them to see if what they visualised has come to pass. I lift off the deck of cards and deck switch for a deck of 51 cards minus the force card bringing out my business card and the new deck as they reveal the card. 5) After what has just happened has sunk in I finish by saying 'of course I know what you want to do now, check the deck and make sure your card is really gone' You start clean and end clean with everything examinable. I have made people cry with this and thankfully it achieves what I expected from Memento but did not find, a card 'freely' chosen leaving the deck and eding up examinable in a block. I was lucky enough to get a booking for a local hotel chain because the year before I had been doing some walkaround at a party for the owner's daughter and managed to get her to sign a card for an ambitious card routine. It went into the big file with all the other signed cards I have ammassed and was forgotten about until I was back again this year for her birthday and came prepared with her signed card inside the lucite block. I had this made specially but it was quite a reasonable price (I'll show you how I make my common old folk giveaways below) Performed at the top table after the speeches for just the immediate family with the other guests enjoying their desserts. Forced the card, got it signed and bam - I will never forget the scream that went up from her when she pulled the little block out of the card case which her dad had been holding onto and inside was her card with her signature. The rest of the night she spent showing all the guests and describing the impossibility of it - 'I saw the block, there was nothing in it, dad held onto it and I CHOSE a card, I even signed it and I just thought about it pushing into the block - I could SEE it moving (hehe see it in her mind but the guests didn't know that) and it ended up in this block. I've been trying to get it out but it's in there' (amazing to see grown people so determined that there must be a way into the block) etc. It killed, I got bookings for all the hotels in the chain and many of their friends booked on the strength of the buzz that had gone round the room. It was the best result I could have ever hoped for. Admittedly I can't keep a file of everyones sigs but I keep the ones I hope will be REALLY useful, given the unsigned limitation I decided to start using the second deck switch as I've found it proves to be a good convincer if they can see that their card is indeed missing. I tried for a while to tear a corner off as a convincer as the deck can still be switched out but it just didn't get much of a reaction, I might revisit that though. Hopefully someone will correct me if I'm wrong but it doesn't appear that you can give memento away - it's more, hey I have a souvenir of some memory, pick a card, pick another card now, look it matched the one that you can see through this block. Memento looks like it has the advantage of a genuine no force selection but really it's not my kind of thing as sadly I like to have people examine things and don't like suspicious movements. Again someone will hopefully correct me if not but it doesn't appear memento is examinable afterwards. Don't get me wrong, I love the idea of Regal's Memento but it doesn't do what I sooooo wanted to do. So to make the blocks for the card case check this out http://www.diynetwork.com/how-to/how-to-......dex.html I have fun because you can set the card half in half out, manipulate the resin so it looks like the card really has squashed into it, melt bits to look like some sort of craziness has taken place and all sorts of the like. You can encase other things in resin too, I made a PK necklace pendant with a big mag inside a cork. The moulds are widely available for little money. Hope this gives you some ideas on what you could do to achieve your effect. |

ALso thought I'd add that the card I use in the block is mainly a certain card from Ben Harris' exellent Silent Running which creates an even more insane effect. If you have silent running you'll know what I mean if you don't have it IMHO get it. On the 6 or so occasions I've played with it live I just executed silent running procedure, had card THOUGHT OF, brought out the block and handed it over for 'safekeeping' bringing out the Silent running deck after the block switch. Now card is deduced again using SR, if it matches the block card which has happened 4 times out of 6 I can have them in their mind visualise the card dissolving from the deck they hold and have it appear in the block. It makes people's brains hurt as the card was merely thought of!!!!!
If it misses I carry out SR as standard without mentioning the block, when the card is not found in the deck I pull it out of my wallet (thanks to SR again) BUT replace it in the wallet. As I close the wallet I 'suddenly remember' I need to add it back into the deck but actually remove the special SR card from the wallet, add it to the deck (so I control it) shuffle and go into the block routine saying 'Now who has the block - oh yes you sir, well we have just seen one feet of the mind but it was my mind acting when I removed her card from the deck prior to the experiment, let us see what amazing things are possible with your mind...' into block routine. When SR special card hits and you can have their merely thought of card appear to have left the deck and entered a block of resin - IN THEIR HANDS it slays, it slays big time. |

Sounds good!
What really wanted (it doesn't have to be signed) is a memento to leave with corporate clients with a card and a special motivational message written across it. The card routine I ha ve been using for years is a special pesentation in fact a whole routine built around premonition. If I could produce the missing card in a sealed block with the message that I could leave with them it would be great. I originally thought of revealing the card in a picture frame which they could hang up in their office. But I think the block would also be a great idea. I imagine momento has a slit? I am also wondering about how clean it reall is and if the video is hiding a few "moves". |

I've pm'ed you.
The blocks are different and if they find their way onto a clients desk as a paperweight or curio ... well you can imagine the number of time that story will be told to everyone who goes into that office! The simplest method foir what you want would be, like I did, to goto someone like this... http://www.midtonacrylics.co.uk/businesssamples.html And get them to encase chosen cards in an acrylic block. You could write your message on the card during the performance so it matches when you pull out the block. |

Thanks James I don't see thepoint of a clear block if you can't leave ir as a "momento"?
