I'm thinking about trying to get a job in a restaurant and am also thinking about getting The Magic Menu. Is this a good book? Can anyone give me a review of it? Thanks in advance.

The magic menu is a great reference for restaurant magic. the current issues are plublished bi-monthly (I think), or you can buy back issues which are sold in groups of 5 years in each book. issues contain articles, product reviews and effects by some of the best restaurant/walk around magicians anywhere.

I assume that you are asking about the two volume set sold by L&L. The Magic Menu - Years 1 through 5 and The Magic Menu - Years 6 through 10. I own both books and love them. Lots of great ideas and material.
If I had to think of something bad about them, it would be that there is so much information that it will take you along time to just read through it all! Highly recommend!!

You will NOT be disappointed! The Magic Menu rocks. Get the books and a subscription, that way you'll have something to read between issues. If I have anything negative to say, it would be that the books are too heavy to read in bed.

Wimp!
Not too heave at all, unless you mean that there's SO much good content that they will keep you awake all night reading and reading that is! A great buy, no question about it. Lee Darrow, C.Ht.

The better values are obviously the bound books, which are exceptional and very entertaining reads. Buy both and you will treasure them as I have.

The book (rather books) were edited and compiled by Jim Sisti with many, many contributors.
For more information about the books and current issues check out http://www.magicmenu.net You won't be disappointed! Andrew |

The Magic Menu is a monthly magazine put out by Jim Sisti. It has contributions from a ton of performers. The focus of the magazine is on restaurant magic. The books are just collections of the magazine - with some extras thrown in.

Just a quick correction to David's post...
The Magic Menu was published every other month for the first 60 issues and quarterly since that time (in an expanded format that encompasses all topics of interest to professional close-up workers). Restaurant work is still featured prominently but time is given to other areas including trade shows, resorts, formal close-up performances, "street" magic and busking, new venues, marketing, positioning, spotlights of up-and-comers, features of notables as well as regular columns on a variety of topics and in every issue practical magic. In the interest of full disclosure, Jim and I co-publish the magazine in its current form. Jim still handles editorial content while I focus on production. Thanks to everyone for their kind words! From what I understand, the Magic Menu is no longer being published as a magazine.
I ended up subscribing and only getting one magazine. Yes, I paid for a whole year and got just one journal. That was not worth it, in my opinion. I'm not sure what their plans are now. Any ideas? Am I wrong about this? Frank

I read on his site that it was no longer going to be published. The books are great, If I could only get 1 book on restaurants it would be this book (or should I say these books) There is so much in there you will not be able to do everything within. I hope there are plans to put out a third book to wrap up the last few years.
Nothing of the same will bring any change, take action today!

So... Here's what the site says.
Due to a number of circumstances, THE MAGIC MENU will no longer be published. Current subscribers should watch their mailboxes for information regarding some manner of refund for issues still due. This is expected to be sent out shortly. To all of our staff, subscribers and friends, thanks for the support for this humble effort over the past twelve years. It was a great run! - Jim Sisti

A good audio tape to purchase is "The Restaurant Magic Business," by Charles Greene. A good book to purchase is "The Restaurant Worker's Handbook," by Jim Pace & Jerry MacGregor. I'm sure you can't go wrong with any of the two items.

Being a mage in constant contact with Jim Sisti, this will sound biased, but I believe Jim is one of the main if not THE expert on restaurant magic. There are many other excellent magi performing, but Jim just knows where it is at. The Magic Menu book is absolutely a fantastic buy for anyone, and not just restaurant workers in my opinion.
But then again, it is also my opinion that you can gain one I.Q. point by watching this for one hour straight. Maybe that's just me. |

Magic Menu is the best stuff I have ever seen for table hoppers and strollers.

I mainly work with young children at preschools, but I bought the hardcover volume 1 collection because once I glanced through it, I didn't want to put it down. It makes for great reading, and has fantastic ideas for performing for families, whether you do table-hopping and strolling or not, and I refer to it for ideas for my birthday programs.
