Myself and another magician local to me are both starting out busking. I have some great ideas for a routine between the two of us. He's 13 and quite a card mechanic. I think I'd like to have an act where we a 'dueling' magicians in a sense. Insulting each other, finishing each others sentences, stealing props from each other and finishing each others effects as though to keep trying to one up each other. One interesting thing is while gaining a crowd and getting the edge we'd do a few effects synchronized, like a signed ambitious card, where we start on opposite sides of the circle, force the same card and do the same sleights with the same patter, once or twice switching places (and decks and spectators for that matter) and going on without missing a beat. Our finale though would be a synchronized cup and ball routine.
I am new to magic and so far I've yet to come up with an idea that hasn't already been done. So, anyone seen anything like this before? Anyone have any pointers?

I'm part of a two man act "The Barker Brothers" and we busk here in Vancouver.
It's a blast... the only drawback of a two man act-- is splitting the hat... Because you sure don't make twice as much. d

It occurs to me that this kid is young enough to be my child. If he lied and said he was 11 and I pushed my age up a bit more it would be even more believeable. Already when we are busking many people ask if he is my son. It could change the dynamic of the routine a little, and allow for some good humor. Any negatives one might foresee with this concept?

His parents are usually heavily involved with the travel arrangements.

Since you envisage a shared act, split the hat - two suggestions. Have a smaller hat nestled inside the larger one and each of you takes one and hats half the circle. or crazy... Cut a fedora in half vertically [I wouldn't do it to my one!!] and lightly velcro the two together to look like one, then when its hatting time build a tug of war for the hat into the act, and the hat splits and you each take a half hat and hat your crowd. Cross over at the half way mark and each continue to do the circle to get any late money! While we're talking a two-man act, take a look at the video on youtube Men In Coats http://www.koreus.com/video/men-in-coats.html. It's hillarious.
The presentation makes the magic.

Thanks for this valued input. We're starting work on our routine tomorrow, sure it will be a couple of months until it's ready to take on the road. He's in school and I have a business to run, so magic takes a back seat for now. Before we go on the road I will be uploading youtube links on here for feedback.
Magicol, that link doesn't work for me. Posted: Nov 5, 2010 5:40pm Magicol, using clues from your link I looked up 'men in coats' and found some vids. I am certain this is what you were trying to show me. Thanks!! Feeling all the more inspired now.

Hi Dave,
That sounds like a really good idea, and the age difference can definitely be a huge crowd pleaser. If pulled off correctly, it could be a huge success. However, I would be careful. You don't want to seem too "competitive" with your partner. It may make the crowd uncomfortable, and give your show an amateurish feel. With 2 men of the same age, it could be a little more comical, but when it appears you're competing with your child for the stage, its a risky venture. Best of luck with your show, I hope it goes well. Hope to hear about it. Have a good Thanksgiving, Brittain Bass |
