I've got a 20-25 minute shot this Saturday at a major city family-oriented kid-centric event. It's outside on a raised stage. I'm not at all worried about having enough material - until I think about the possibility of a breeze blowing.
One of my best opening effects is making a red silk and a yellow silk turn into an orange silk in a change bag. The early comedy is when the silks fall through the unzipped bag, and I don't see. If I don't see, and there's a breeze, then I can imagine spending a lot of time chasing silks across the stage! If the breeze (predictions are about 5 mph) blows towards the kids below, then it's gold - they can bring them back up. If not, it could get ugly! Is there a quick and easy way to mitigate this? Sewing a small weight into the corner perhaps? Or would I be better off selecting a different routine? Ed |

It's been my experience that small, lightweight silks and working outdoors in any wind whatsoever are, basically, a recipe for disaster.
I would pick a different routine, personally. |

Put a penny in the upper corner and fold the silk over the penny and use fabric glue.
If not, have 2 extra silks along to grab in case the originals go flying. The laugh would be worth the $3 silk.

I suggest you choose a different routine as well. I found outside with wind is not a good situtation.
As an alternative, how about when you put the silk in the bag, you go down to a pocket and place it in your pocket. That keeps the silk from blowing away. The kids will still yell, and you keep your silk. Just an idea. Don't forget to weigh everything down, it is a different working situtation. |

Put a silk on a reel, and let it go. When the kids say it blew away. Reel it in.

Depending on the size of silk and the wind, a large knot may change things enough to give you control. Still, given a choice, change the routine.

We work in the wind most of the time, from time to time if it gets gusty and stays that way, we change up routines a bit, but during our many years of outside work, we have learned how to work with the wind to our favors. sometimes you just have to do it, then you will pick up on answers as you run into the situations,,, take note and apply new fixes to the future. The penny idera is great, and Jef Eaton is full time outside guy very pro, I have friends that brag on him immensleym his penny idea is awesome and simple,, also for your drop thru bit, you can always step on it as well accidentley and un noticed, even some double sticky on the bottom tip of the sho so it sticks, then as the kids yell its under your foot, you raise your leg to the side, and you claim you don't see the silk on the floor as your leg is moved to the side... just imagine the screams as you turmn many circles looking for it... a great gag to get your kids screaming. Break a leg

Fishing weights - small buttons -- velcro - tricks not needing silk individual detachments - and definitely not the Classic Pagoda where individual silks fly out when whirled.

Another option is to use ribbons instead of silks. I use them in Uncanny Silks, in outdoor shows, and they don't drift like a silk will.

Currently sewing a penny into the corner of my silks. Y`all are geniuses!! And the double-stick tape is a grand idea. But one change on the fly is enough for now.
Ed Posted: Nov 8, 2010 11:55am Just to let y'all know - it went over great!! I like chmara's idea of the small weights vice the pennys. Thanks for saving my routine! Ed |
