Does anyone know of a good place to find those copper British Crowns. I've got a set that uses 2 particular British copper crowns. I had them made 5 years ago mostly by Schoolcraft. I found the coins, bought them, and send them to Schoolcraft. I'd like to get some more gaffs made, but I can't find these online anymore.
In particular I'm using an Edwardvs VII D : G :BR : OMN : REX 1936 and a Victoria Dei Gratia Ind Imp 1893 Thanks! |

You can try to buy some copper coins made by todd lassen. It would be much easier

Thanks. I just found out these are called Fantasy Pattern Crowns. They are limited Mint and it sounds like Lassen bought up a bunch. I don't think he makes them---but how knows. I see now why they were more common 5 years ago.

Todd does have crowns he has made specifically for gaffing. The have the advantage of all being even wear, etc (meaning no wear, which may be bad if you like soft coins). The tails side is the best, imho.

That's very impressive. I didn't realize he was actually making those. His site implies he bought them.

I just checked that out. That's not bad...but not what I was looking for. Fortunately I have been able to find different Copper Fantasy Pattern Crowns on ebay mostly by looking on ebay in the UK and, of all places, Singapore. I found some pretty cool ones in sets of 6 for about the same prices as a minted one from Lassen would be for 1 (and, of course, I won't have to wait 2 months to get them).
It looks like it's going to be extremely hard to get specific Fantasy Pattern Crowns though. They seem to go in runs of 500-1000. I have 5 each of the ones I originally mentioned. The chances of me finding more of those specific ones are starting to feel remote. |

That's one of the reasons I ended up going with the ones Todd makes. I've got an unlimited supply, as long as he keeps making them, and I can even pick up various gaffs from his site or his blog without as much work sending him the coins. As to the wait, I've had better luck than that for just a few coins, but individual mileage may vary.
I will say, the tails side of the crowns he has is very nice. The heads is much nicer in person than I thought it was on the site, but the tails side is what I generally use. |

Yea, I can understand that. I've since found that if I'm not picky about the country I can find plenty of "Fantasy Pattern" Crowns. I've grabbed some from Scotland and there are some fairly nice Russian ones also. They often are available in batches of 6-10 -- but that's about right for doing a few gaff sets. I'm also thinking it's not a bad idea to have a bit of variety to keep it interesting.

Coincidentally (truly) I happened to get a Lassen Scotch and Soda gimmick on ebay that has his minted pattern crowns. One thing that's not ideal is that the two coins (the gimmicked and the ungimmicked crowns) have different coloration -- one is darker than the other. I realize that this is probably not Lassen's fault, but it brings up a question -- how do you deal you all deal with that issue? That is, how do you clean your coins to keep them looking close enough to each other to make sure people don't spot the switch?

You have two choices.
Clean them both to make them shine and keep them that way. Clean them at the same time and let them tarnish at the same rate by handling the same amount. It is very difficult to get them to tarnish to look the same. I guess you also could use something like Liver of Sulfur to tarnish them to look the same also. Mike |
