Without disrespect to those who are descended from or who currently dwell in the lands of our one-time adversaries, may I wish a meaningful Remembrance Day observance to our members in the British Commonwealth. Let us pause and remember what Armistice Day once commemorated . . . the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month . . . and heartfelt thanks to our American veterans. You know, our American veteran is someone who once signed a blank check . . . payable to the United States . . . in any amount up to and including life itself . . . there are no words . . . but thank you for your service.
Peace Out. Woland |

Armistice day, for those not familiar, was when WW1 ended for Western Europe. It became veterans day. I remember it as the day when the Vietnam wives and widows would give out red flowers so their husbands would be remembered.

You went without the question why.
You went without knowing whether you'd live or die. You left leaving friends and loved ones behind. You left with greater purpose in mind. And those of us you left back here. It's in our thoughts we hold you dear. And thank for your sacrifice. No words could ever truly suffice. Thank you for all the things you do. To keep us safe and freedom true. Happy Veteran's day! When I was in the Navy I was shot at, stabbed, in fights, all that....and that was just one topless joint. I found out that our friends the UKers still hand out the red poppies and I saw some today at the vet cemetary people had on.

Wow. I remember those red poppies. My grandmother was in the VFW and she asked me to help distribute those poppies one year. I sat there with my bicycle, a box of poppies and a coin can wondering where I could find the most people who would want to donate and get a little paper flower.
Then I remembered Thames Street. Thames Street, back then, was a line of small bars that were frequented by sailors in the area (as well as retired service people.) Everybody, in every bar bought poppies. Each bartender bought poppies. I filled three cans! When I feel bad about myself, that's one of the four things I think back on that gives me a good feeling about myself.

This coming Sunday is Remembrance Sunday in Britain. Royal Family, Politicians, Military big brass etc. all gather to witness a huge parade past The Cenotaph in the capital City, London.
But throughout the rest of the UK thousands of other gatherings in miniature of the one at The Cenotaph take place. Almost every town and village has a memorial to the fallen and poppies are placed at these. I am old enough to remember parades of WW1 veterans. Sadly these are no longer with us. I think it goes without saying that we remember our friends in Canada, the USA, New Zealand, Australia etc. also, plus fallen Comrades from all British Commonwealth Countries. Let me tell you I have also visited, in addition to British and Canadian Cemeteries, your Cemetery at the hill on top of Omaha Beach, France, and I cannot explain in words the feeling of seeing the sacrifice you made in this nightmare. Every Canadian, Brit. and American should try and visit these landing beaches some time in their lives if they can afford the fare. Whatever mistakes we've all made since 9/11 we cannot fail to commemorate our fallen during the past decade either. They died serving their Countries, irrespective of the politics of these conflicts.
