Okay - I now have a web site, a Facebook page, and a WordPress blog.
Is there a basic, "For Dummies" giude to how all these fit together to create the best online presence? Some of their capabilities overlap. What is best done with which vehicle? There's static content, updated content, photos and videos, contacts, and I don't know what else! Can domeone point me to a nice no-frills guide through all of this? Ed |

I'm definitely no expert on this subject. However, all these technologies are not necessarily there so each will serve a specific purpose. Don't get me wrong, each social network has its advantages. What I mean to say is people overlook advertising 90% of the time, but its that 10% that we makes it all worth it. The same applies to social networks. My website has a link to all of my social networking sites because some people use different ones more than others. All of my social networks have links to my other social networks. All of my news updates say a lot of the same information because I want people to see it any way they can. Chances are people will not check your facebook, then your twitter, then your website, etc. They look at one (depending on which they use) and move on.
Therefore, just update each of these regularly and remember this main point: BE INTERESTING. Post links, comment on other people's posts, etc. People will only look if you have something of value to look at. Also, keep in mind who your target audience is. Remember that teacher who made negative post about children? She doesn't have a job anymore. |

That`s a good perspective, Dave. It makes sense to put a lot of the same content in the different places.
If it wasn`t for magic, I honestly wouldn`t have any of this. I can`t see Twitter - I don`t have that much to say. Mostly, I want to inform people of upcoming shows and special deals, and have a place to show off photos and video of people enjoying themselves. Ed |

If visibility is your goal, and you don't even have many friends for those pages, you're probably better off just using an email service. You can have those pages just as references, but not update them regularly. I've gotten quite a few shows from my facebook page, but the people who hire me regularly use it. If your customers don't use it often, then just have it as a backup.
I think the real questions are, what kind of shows are you trying to do, who hires you for those kinds of shows, and how do those people shop online? |

Close.Up.Dave nailed it.
First thing to do... absolutely first thing... is to nail down who you are targeting with your online presence. What problems are they trying to solve? What matters most to them? What tools do they use to try to solve those problems? e.g., - if you're in the birthday party business, I am 1000% convinced that it is totally analogous to being a plumber. No one cares about plumbers ... if you spot a popup ad for a plumber, you ignore it... if you see a flyer for a plumber, you ignore it... And then the toilet explodes. Dang... I need to find a plumber! That's exactly IMO (and experience) how the mind of a birthday mom works. She knows junior has a party coming up in four months, but it doesn't reach the top of the stack until about 2 weeks to go... Dang... I need to find ________! Figuring out what gets entered into that ____________ is your job in nailing down your websites' key words, content, URLs, etc. (And don't forget the basic stuff like crafting your offer, features, benefits, guarantee, call to action, etc.) If you skip this vitally important step, all the techno-savvy in the world won't mean squat.

Jack - I know you're into this - I get your emails.
On the other hand, there's also this: This is what I have to advertise with. (Yes, there are other avenues, but I either can't afford them or they're not applicable at this point in time.) So these are the people I'm targeting. The people in this arena are my targets. My first priority was to get something up there. Now I'm trying to grapple with refining this. The birthday-in-8-months is something I'm factoring in now. I'm going to be expanding my offerrings. And I'm also going to expand my coverage. Brithdays are happening all the time. (No, haven't bought your course yet, Jack.) All I'm wondering at this point is - what is the best function for each of these? I've used a pipe wrench as a hammer before, but it doesn't work best like that. So what is the best use of each of these? There are places where they have overlapping functions, and I could use one or the other. But knowing the best function for one format over another might help. Ed |
