My stage name is a bit of a no brainer. I took my second name (which is also my nickname, confusing huh) and simply added magic as an adjective.
YOu may think it over simple, amatuerish and childish but it really works.New bookers comment when they hear my name "wow, that sounds like fun" just from the name. Also it's simple for kids they immediatly know what I'm about. People seem to love referring to me by my stage name too, they get a kick from ringing up and asking for me by that name, some people even ring from work to book because they know there colleagues are going to be intrigued by a phone call to "Magic George". Also as soon as I pick up the phone and someone asks for me by my stagename I immediatly know it's a business call in relation to an entertainment matter so I can be reaching for my booking sheet from the off. When I happen to meet previous clients in social circumstances they will call me over so they can introduce there friends to "Magic George" which they usually follow with a fantastic sales pitch of my services which even I would be to humble to give. Out come the business cards and there we go. So yes, I think a stagename works wonders as long as you keep it fun and simple. Magic Matt, you are not going to believe this but I used to share a house with the other Magic Matt you found, by complete coincidence and nothing to do with magic. In my student days there was a room free and Matt turned up looking for somewhere to rent, small world huh. I can gladly inform you that he is an really excellent performer and his name is equity registered. Magic George (Name availabe for stealing by non-equity members with no scruples ) |

You need an original name so you stand out from the rest, when I look in the yellow pages theres all variations of the:- Magic by Terry, Terry's Magic, theme using various different names. If I were a booker I'd think they were all the same.
Often when people tell me they've seen another magician they can't remember their name, in fact it's only after they've described him, or a trick he did that I tell them who they saw and the penny drops. The only ones who's names people never forget are mine and Billy Wiz because we are different and memorable.

I believe You can't copyright it unless it is original to you and you can prove you used it first. As my name was invented by me and business has been around for a number of years, and I have written proof to prove it including published articles in 'The Budget'. If it came to a court battle I would win.
look at the arguements that occur among pop groups and big firms when someone uses there names, it all comes down to who can prove they used it first. However, as Phil said it may be a case of Equity only protecting your name among members, I don't think I'd ever have to face that problem, because as I'm only world famous in the Plymouth area, no-one is really going to want to steel my name anyway. If you were to use Emazdad, how would you explain the name to a booker? I'm Emma's Dad that's where the name comes from? (Funnily enough ny neighbour is Emma's Dad as well).

Names really do matter. This is one reason why ccmpanies and entertainers spend a lot of time and money developing the name of any product etc. It is about branding and name recognition out in the marketplace.
You want any prospect to immediately be able to recall the name and the image that goes with it. Kyle

HI, I think if you have a difficult real name then changing it could be an advantage also if you are not getting all the bookings you would like.. but if you are using your real nameare where yopu want to be and get more bookings than you can handle then I personaly don't see the point. I actually know a couple of performers who suffered from oversaturation... what I mean by this is that it is that because they where always booked people stopped ringing them because the word got around that they where always booked up ... yes you want to turn some people away but not have so much work that you are turning away as many if not more shows than you perform. Using your real name can work just fine as long as it is a name that is easy to remember and easy to say. As PB mentioned, if you have a difficult name, then changing it might work better for you.
Also, if you find yourself super busy and always having to turn work away, then it might be time to think about increasing your fees or maybe brokering out some of the extra work to others you trust. Just my two cents worth. Kyle

Up until 15 years ago I performed under my real name "Richard Lyn".
At one of my birthday performances one kid jumped up and shouted "my mommy said that your "Tricky Dicky" which got a load of laugh from the mommies and dads watching the show, to which I replied "no Johnny it Tricky Ricky". That same night quite a few of the mothers called to book shows, and they addressed me as "Tricky Ricky". Now, the children took off on it and every party I attended they called me by that name. The children used to say "there goes the funny magician when they see me on the streets now,its there is Tricky Ricky. When I do banquets I use "Tricky Ricky"the adults love the name. Easy to remember and very catchy. Richard Kyle, you are also quite right about using your real can work. Providing your name is not John Smith or, something like that. David Ben who is the biggest name in Canada and will be internationally known in the near future uses his real name. Tom Baxter who is an icon in Toronto uses his real name. Mark Lewis who is the best all round performer in Toronto and Paul Pacific Top Mentalist all uses their real names. Yes,it can work. Richard Lyn "Tricky Ricky" |

I believe STRONGLY in stage names. Good ones, well thought out.
1) They set the tone of your show and personality. Captain Kid tells every one it is a Pirate character and probably for kids. There have been a lot of "captains" too Captain Kangaroo, Captain America . .. as well as some immediate name recognition. Of course, I have seen a performer with a name like: "Mr. Incredibly Intelligent" Perhaps he can pull it off, I have not seen him perform. I know it would be difficult to use unless the character was mentally lacking, which, I believe is not the case here. 2) They can keep separate characters separate. My pirate character is completely different for my straight magician character, and they are both completely different than my bizarre character. Before separating them I lost business because I would be typecast into one venue/age. Now each has his own, completely different website. 3) When some one call and asks for __________ I immediately know for which character (or myself) they are asking. If I used my real name, I would be a little schizophrenic in their eyes. 4) When I want to be a non-entertainer, I can use my name with little chance of recognition from it. 5) I have actually had two different characters hired for the same fair. 2 x the pay. I did get asked, and I said that the other guy and I are equally handsome. They were happy, I was happy. |

This thread ended a long time ago but it seems the appropriate place to post this. After my wife modified my pants with some 'special' pockets, she started calling me 'Sponge Balls Magic Pants'. Is that too much of a double entendre for a childrens performer?

Right place right time that could be a very funny line. At a kid's show it will probably make some people a little upset.

I think maybe I used to take the name thing too far. After working at a restaurant for 3 years, the manager one day realised he had no idea what my real name was and had to ask me. Even socially outside the restaurant he ( and most other people) called me by my clown name.

When I first started out I used my clown name. My daughters come to some of the events where people would ask them my name. They would tell people Brad. The kids would always say B-Rad. I kept hearing this over and over at events. SO... I started using that and it has been a hit. It is even funny when adults call the office and ask for B-Rad. They start laughing when they say the name to another adult on the phone. I have had once lady from the Girls Scouts call to book me. When she said B-Rad she started laughing so hard she hung up. I called her back and said "You had so much funny just saying my name, my shows are going to be even funnier." I have been booking shows with them for years now. This was all because of a name
