Yes, it can be done -- though some members of the audience may have come with preconceived notions.

Each mind is unique and carries its own version of what happened. I do disagree with you though. To imply you use NLP or that you are a real expert of the mind is unethical and in bad taste unless of course you are. And just isn't necessary. Especially when you know absolutely nothing of the subject. It confuses the public about the real applications and value of the subject. Brown did it at a time when NLP was hugely popular and mentalism was largely unknown in this country. I really admired what he did at the time fooling magicians and mentalist but that was a unique time. Even Derren has moved on. For a very large section of an audience theatrical representation doesn't exist. They beileve what they see is what they see. I think we have a responsability not only to out audience but those fields we mock by claiming to be experts. It is no different to claming to psyhic - in fact its much worse in my view. |

I used to struggle with how I should present my abilities. I am now back to calling myself a "magician," despite the fact that I only perform mentalism. The nice thing about it is that the adults I perform for just conclude that I am amazing, and unlike any other "magician" they have ever seen. The fact that I refer to myself as a magician lets them off the hook, in terms of having to interpret what I might otherwise mean by referring to myself as a "mindreader" or "psychological illusionist," etc.
I don't think this diminishes the impact of my performances. If anything, it increases it, since people have to at least consider their frame of reference and preconceptions about magic and magicians in general when they watch me perform. They are certainly no less amazed than if I were to have referred to myself as some kind of self-proclaimed "master of psychology," and are a lot less incredulous than if I were to attempt to portray myself as a psychic. If pressed, I will say "it's just a trick" and leave it at that. They still are no less amazed. (I do, however, make this statement as unsatisfying an answer as possible. I get my jollies this way.) -Ben Blau

I heard a disclaimer that was quite appropriate to not disrupt the illusion of the event. It went along the lines of course what you will see is real and I can read minds and predict the future which is why I'm entertaining you instead of retired in the Caribean with my lottery winnings. With that said, lets begin our experiments.

That's a variation of Maurice Fogel's disclaimer. I also have used a variation of this for the past several years.

Who is pink boy?
Viktor: In order to understand what they think, they must have thoughts. So it is the thoughts that you are discerning, not their "mind". - entity
