Why do we have to say "pun intended" or "no pun intended"? If the pun were any good, it shouldn't require an explanation...

It's a shorter way of saying "I believe I just said something funny but it might fly over the heads of you dummies so let me draw attention to it in the time honoured fashion".
Shakespeare and Myles na Gopaleen were good at puns - a lot of people are not.

Lots of people have untimely deaths, but has anyone ever had a timely death. How about an unfortunet accident, or jumbo shrimp.

Timely deaths, yes, very much so.
Fortunate accidents, the tales abound in success stories. The problem here is people trying to be clever when they are not, in using "no pun intended". They have ruined the phrase for those who wish to make a point but must navigate through a word which will trigger small minded comments from those who believe they must share their new found "cleverness". |

Don't be so pembeic! See how dumb attempted cleverness can be.

Because some puns are so subtly clever that, if unannounced, they might go innuendo and out the other. (Pun intended).
On the other hand, a speaker should be courageous enough to let his artistry stand on its own merits. A man's reach should exceed his grasp, or what's a metaphor? |

"Pun intended" is useful when you've made a smart-a••e comment, and when the last time you made one, someone drew attention to it and explained it to you as if you hadn't realised. It may be redundant, but you're taking no risks this time!

I actually tested this today. I tried ten times to make someone laugh with various clever puns. You'd think at least one would have caused a laugh, but no pun in ten did.
