For a long time now, I have been thinking that the mystery of Erdnase would make for a compelling movie in the hands of the right screenwriter and director.
I have always thought that Matthew Gray Gubler (Supervisory Special Agent Dr. Spencer Reid in Criminal Minds) would make the perfect S.W. Erdnase. I read somewhere that he has an early background in magic. Can anyone else see this lithe actor with finely-boned hands and a unique vocal inflection as Erdnase? If not, who would be your choice?

Since no one knows who he was or what he looked like, I'd say "anyone"...
I guess a real "chameleon face" actor like Gary Oldman would be best.

If Erdnase was a woman I vote for Angelina Jolie, Scarlett Johanson, or Kathy Bates.

Gubler's too tall, and Pacino is too old to play Erdnase.
I suppose Pacino could play Erdnase some 40 years after he wrote the book.........but I'm not sure what the story would be at that point in time........and it's somewhat of a crap shoot that Erdnase was still alive when he would have been in his late 60's. We've got an excellent physical description of Erdnase from M.D. Smith. |

I f I recall, M.D. Smith described Erdnase as small and thin, maybe 5 ' 6", approx. 40 years old.
He was, according to Smith, blond(ish), above average in looks and extremely refined. Who can say if this description was another ruse to hide S.W.E’s true identity? In any event, the purpose of this thread is to play Fantasy Casting Director with a dose of whimsy and a dash of poetic license.

Maybe the role should be casted to a couple of different actors/actresses. Perhaps Erdnase wasn't just one person, but a collaberation of several people. Maybe he wasn't even a man?

I thought the standard actor to be named in movies not to be made about magician is Tom Cruise?

I like the various players concept. “I’m Not There,” ruminations on the life of Bob Dylan, used that narrative frame, where six actors embodied a different aspect of the musician's life and work. Cate Blanchett played one of the “Dylans”! Another variation of the theme can be an Erdnase “Rashômon” approach. In the 1950 Japanese original, a heinous crime and its aftermath are recalled from differing points of view. Imagine many different interpretations of Erdnase, each at times affirming and at other times contradicting one another...the “is” of Erdnase’s ultimate identity receding into a delicious and deceptive hall of mirrors...
