Hey everyone, I am looking to make my first promo dvd. I was just wondering if anyone had any tips, or point me in the right direction to start? Any help will greatly be appreciated. Thanks.

#1 rule: KEEP IT SHORT.
Think of a television commercial and how much, visually, is packed into 30 seconds. 1 minute can be a lifetime on TV. A good promo should whet the client's appetite to learn more about your act or show. So, keep it no more than 3 minutes. My best promo tape (in the old "tape" days) was 90 seconds long. That's 1-1/2 minutes - total. The only exception to the above rule is when you're creating an audition DVD for cruise ships, casino review shows, or auditioning at the Magic Castle. In these instances they want to see your ENTIRE act - unedited - just as a live audience would see it. In that case it pays to hire the best crew you can who know how to shoot live shows, to help you look your best. Good luck! |

Thanks for the tip! I really appreciate it. I think the main part that I am stuck on is, I perform mentalism. Without showing a whole trick people may not understand what I am doing. I can throw some visual stuff in there but for the most part what I do is mostly mind reading.

You can edit the effect showing (briefly) the set-up and most importantly - the revelation. And foremost: AUDIENCE REACTION. That is what sells it to the viewer.

I am a mentalist....my promo video highlights the punchline of routines, visuals, and testimonials from crowds as well as audience reactions. I list with flying text on screen what they will see in the show while trying to show visuals of on stage performance. Also list with text client names who youve done shows for.
Its hard for us mentalists...its not as visual. So you have to make a video resume that lists what they will see, who youve worked for, and plenty of testimonials. Keep it short, mine is 3 minutes. I also suggest making it fast pace from cut to cut. David is right. I not only provide a 3 minute promo on the dvd/interactive cd, but I also provide a full length show video on the same disks. Some clients will want to see in full what they are getting. Most clients will go by the short promo...ive never seen a cruise ship or casino watch a full video past 2 minutes in length. A lot of it probably has to do with your resume and credibility to them. |
