The foundations for what is currently being studied with regards to the behaviour of light (I was referring to it being constant, not the discovery of the speed itself) is also quite old. So, studying of the behaviour of light, particles, and the like, and discussion thereof in media/news is not something we see people criticizing for not including disclaimers like we do the origins of the universe. Within he circles of those studying it, I don't think we really need to be reminding them that they are working from "theories," not that I am saying that is what o wish, but some certainly do seem to express this desire. As for encouraging them to be responsible with regards to informing the public, making sure they remind us these are "only" theories, or "only" the "current" theory, is, in some regards, a legitimate criticism, I don't think it is really a balanced one.

Yes, I understand your points. And there is definitely a point at which people can say, "Yes, but we don't have to say that every stinking time!"
Personally, I want to know whether a project result is scientific or speculative, whether it be about the effect of egg yolks on cholesterol (which sometimes seems like watching a tennis ball go back and forth!) or our present subject. Really, when something comes up that piques ones interest causes a critical question, it is up to the individual to do a little homework digging if they want to know more.
My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

VERY true. I find it is best, especially when looking at things like eggs, and nutrition, to simply not forget history. Particularly with nutrition, what we hear is usually told either to make a story, or to sell a diet. Also, so often what the majority walk away with from such stories is just the headline, not bothering to look into what is actually being said. That's actually how we ended up with the whole anti-high fructose corn syrup craze. Not that it's not bad for you, but there was much more to the study that spawned the craze. That being said, taking away information like that is a bit different with nutrition, where we ca, and often do, apply said "knowledge" to our own lives, unlike the scientific stories we read/hear, in which we tend to just walk away with talking points to share with out friends, or botch about online.

Uh guys.... Carrie is NOT wrong. I am a scientist, and I believe very strongly in the work of the collider. I think scientists will learn a lot about the past. But, the fact is, none of them were there to see the big bang. Neither was I. I do believe that Hubble traced the motion of the universe back to a point of origin, but big bang, or finger of a deity or both... how should I know? The fact is that was science does is to examine evidence and draw conclusions. Sometimes these are disproved by later evidence, such as Einstein updating Newton. In either case, I see a lot of people blaming/crediting Carie for things I don't believe she really said. Why not ask?
LOL Chessman, It wasn't hard to figure out based on what you said.

Folks, if you've been following recent observations there's quite a bit of "wtf" in the standard models both big and small.
Would anyone happen to have a layman's description of Hawking's work from which he stated that there was only one "big bang"? Also, since we keep bumping into this logical molehill - a citation to an argument about how there can be only one deity/creator?

Hold the phone.
This topic was posted to discuss LHC, science, research and whatever else in that vein popped up. Notwithstanding the twists and turns that topics take, if you want to direct discussion specifically toward religious matters and polytheism, I would kindly asked that you start another thread as these sorts of discussions tend to result in the sudden disappearance of the entire discussion. Cheers, Nosher

Through the ages, people have always fretted about science unlocking the "mysteries" of the universe. For whatever reason at the time. But... you can't make an omelette without breaking some eggs (or, in this case, without smashing some atoms ). Knowledge is always good. Of course, how one uses that knowledge can be said to be good or bad. But where knowledge does not have an immediate practical benefit, the knowledge itself is it's own reward. IMO, the LHC experiments will add to our knowledge of the universe in some way, shape, or form. And if I were a cheerleader I would chant... "GO L-H-C, GO L-H-C- - SMASH THOSE A-T-O-M-S! YAAAAY LHC!!!!"
