Mr Palmer: You have got to be the first "magician" that I have ever heard that works for "MONEY,not fun". If you are not having fun why did you start doing magic? You must have quite a personality,or act well enough to be in movies, to be "an enjoyable" performer to watch. Making money performing magic is nice and FUN. Or,at least it SHOULD be. Looking forward to you grading my post. I hope I passed,Professor.

You should first get some card DVDs and learn a whole bunch of card routines this way your clean at the end and aren't left with any gaffs or gimmicks

First, remember that David Blaine has a camera, crew, and actors pretending to be spectators, that is NOT street magic. Gazzo, Danny Hustle, Tom Frank, and others are buskers and make their living performing on the streets, gathering a crowd, doing a show and passing the hat for money. The only thing in common that all buskers have is that their magic is IMPECCABLE! They are as good if not better than any stage magician you can think of because their "boss" is the person walking down the street, if you are not good, they walk off, if you are good, they watch and drop a bill into your hat. If you are not good, you don't eat, if you are good, you live very well. Don't try to do street magic until you can classify your skills as at least an intermediate level. |

I know two pro's and they always have to borrow my cards or coins - and then they make me look like a chump for carrying them! I'm guessing Mr. Palmer is one of the few honest ones around. He's a professional, that's his method for making money. And just as the other two that I actually know, he could probably do magic with dang near anything around, thus relieving him of the burdon of carrying a bunch of props around all the time. When you've been in the game long enough, you become a bit more resourceful. From what I've seen, it's us amatuers who carry a ton of props around with us, not the pro's (unless they're working of course). I don't think he meant that he doesn't enjoy doing magic at all, quite the contrary. If you've ever read a few posts by him, you'd know better anyway. The guy appears to eat, sleep and breathe magic. As far as the grading goes, if you take a shot at someone it's a good rule of thumb to expect criticsm in return.

I usually carry a deck of cards, a packet trick (professionals are throwing up now), a coin purse with assorted coins and tricks. However, I always have a camera bag that I converted to a close-up kit near by in the car or hotel room, should the demand require it.
But I'm with Bill, I don't do magic for fun, alone. I do it for love and money. Now that I'm older, it's mostly for money.

A conversation that goes on for two solid years must be a darnn good one..
I usually carry a few things in my pockets - never leave the house without a deack (an ordinary one, thank you very much). But I find it is best not to impose yourself too much. Once you bring up the fact that you are a magicians, they'll want you to "do something..!" If I don't feel they want it bad enough, or if I feel they just want to "show me" I can't fool them - I just give them my business card and say they can check out my web site. I don't put the address here because it is in Hebrew. Have fun! Roi. |

Definitly consider an ambitious card DVD(Daryl's) and practice, become a pro on this and you'll be fine, you might also wanna get some gimmicks like the stealth pen, also get the 2 card monte download from ellusionist.

When I go do my magic I usually carry a deck of cards and three coins. This gives me enough of a trick arsenal to do a lot mind blowing effects for the unknowing spectator. you might cheak out some of jay sankey's dvds. They have some very practical effects on them.

Why dose every one use gimmicked things? doing tricks with normal objecks gives you a better reputation because you can hand every thing out for inspection and not just walk away. I just carry one or two normal decks of bicyle cards and some coins and some loops.

Leefoly, Bill is 100% correct, a professional magician does magic for a fee, if you start doing shows for free pretty soon your magic isn't worth your fee. I think its pretty obvious why, why should this group pay when that group doesn't pay. Or they saw you free, are you sure your fee isn't to high, try negotiating a fee then. Just a few problems that arise for someone who earns thier livelyhood performing magic as a professional. I don't for one second believe Bill doesn't have a love or appreciation of magic, in fact to have been at it as long as Bill I would suggest to you it is in his blood. If you put no value on your abilities why would a prospective client put a value on you, after all you sometimes work for free. On the other side if you are a hobbyist, hey have fun show everyone you can think of your magic and you'll probably get invited back to a lot of parties, but if you plan on earning a living in magic, lesson number 1, no freebies.
