In my area the bouncy castles are called moonwalks or moonbouncers. I do supply different designs other than castles.

I always try and make every effort to work with the client. But with this said, I also try to let them know that to have the best show possible, for the money they are spending, it would be beneficial not to have distractions. Usually they totally understand and do not have a problem with turning off the bounce or turning off any music from a DJ etc.
I show them all and total respect and in a lot of ways, I get this back from them.

The key is to be polite and diplomatic in all your dealings with the booker. On things like distractions, you suggest strongly that something is a good idea to get the best performance and maximum fun for the kids, not demand something happens or you won't perform.

Clive is 100% correct. You can not come off as demanding things of your client. You need to act and be professional and gain their trust in you that you know what you are doing. If you can gain this trust early on, most of the time the people will look to you as the expert in kids' shows since you have done so many of them. Sometimes they will even ask you for advice on how to handle things.

I performed a show Saturday and there was a bouncy Castle. When my show started I turned up the music and made an announcement. The show went well for all 45 minutes. It helped to get 3 volunteers up right away. That way the kids all knew they could be part of the show.

I had my first and probably last encounter with a bouncy castle for the summer on Sunday. I also had to contend with a swing set, parents talking, and a mother on a cell phone. And you know what I did? Nothing! I just ignored it all. The show was great for the kids that wanted to watch and the ones that didn't want to watch had fun too. Judging by the tip from the father hosting the party, I must have done well. So, that's my 2 cents.

I have just read you post again msjl. Thanks for sharing your experience. I really feel I have learned as much from your post as I would have being in that situation myself. Better you than me.
I think one of the real core problems msjl had here was the parent’s expectations. My guess is that they failed to distinguish the difference between having a magician & having a magic show. A clown doing balloons or juggling might have suitied them a lot better. From the story it sounds like a yellow pages job. Referrals or Seen Befores know what to expect from a magic show. When any type of show is on distractions need to be minimized. They would not expect to go to the theatre & sit next to pinball or pokie machines while other adults played snooker. Even if it is in your back yard it is still a show. Fortunately I have noticed that the sort of parents that want a magician to keep the kids out of their face so they can talk or drink are the same parents that tend to call at short notice wanting something for the coming Saturday at 1:00pm. Incidentally I always ask if these parties are going to have adults present. If there are going to be a lot of adults then I pitch my service as a family magic show that the adults will also enjoy. Nine times out of ten the client is delighted with this because they feel they are killing two birds with one stone. Also it is much nicer to arrive at these gigs and be greeted by adults that are expecting to be entertained. I hate it when the adults view me as the kiddie clown.

I believe that even my kid's show should be fun for the adults. I say as much at the time of the booking and use some comedy in the show that goes over the kids'. (you can even make a joke of that in an aside "That ones for you guys."refering to the adults) OR ("If you sit up a little taller kids these jokes won't go over your heads.") However you do your show the point is that the adults are a part of your audience. you may even consider calling them up to help with a trick or two. The kids will enjoy seeing an adult help and will also feel a sense of equality in seeing and adult being asked to be part of the show. At the same time the adults will take your skills as a magician more seriously and see that you can also do adult social events. Finally I seem to be out of gin would you care for a instead?

First a question...Does anyone else charge extra for last minute bookings? ($25.00 US) [/quote] No... Not something I've thought about. I have done quite a few last minute shows but never considered charging extra. Does it not create the impression of being a bit money grabbing? How last minute are we talking about? A couple of days, or a couple of hours? Mark |

If I have a gap in my schedule that does not fill until the day or two before I am usually quite thankful to get that last minute booking.
No I do not charge any extra.

I do not charge any extra as well. If I am free and I can do the show, then I am happy to take the booking. I do charge a traveling fee if the performance is outside of my usual performance area.

I don't charge extra. If my schedule is too tight I'll recommend my friend.
