It's often been asked how the Golden Rule would work for a sadomasochist.

Frank Douglas put it best when he said...
"There is a big difference between inspiration and imitation." ...Frank, I'll probably end saying this to people myself now! Col.

Being yourself doesn't mean using your own props and or effects. If that were true there would be no magic shops.
The trick so to speak is to put your own twist on them. So how do you do that? By relating your own experiences to the magic/mentalism. Take the invisible deck for an example. You can perform it as indicated in the instructions by having a participant think of a card and then revealing face down in the face up pack. OR. You can say that while in Las Vegas at a poker table you saw an interesting thing happen. It was odd as the dealers who handle the cards are such professionals. But on this day at this time there must have been some magic in the air because as he was dealing the cards flew from his hand and landed on the table all face up. Except for one card, and do you know what that card was? No matter what they say of course you go on as usual. But do you see how an experience you may or may not have had can take a trick and make it your own? Anyway that's one way. After time as your knowledge base grows you may also think that a particular slight or move or action is unnecessary, or could be done differently. Now your handling of that particular trick will become distinctive to you. That's another way. Or maybe after even more time in the art will stat thinking about how and why your doing what your doing and choose to go a whole different way with it altogether. The point is "being yourself" means tacking the things that make you unique or special and apliying them to magic. Unfortunately many people are not special and in fact very ordinary and try to do extraordinary things as themselves and in so doing fall flat on their faces. This is where acting comes in. If you can act like somebody special then you are for all intent a purposes somebody special. I'm not talking little yellow bus special. I'm talking about the character your choose to portray. Anyway that's why reading books can be better than watching videos. It forces you to relate the writing to yourself. I hope that helps. Cheers.
Just cause they say it, doesn't make it true.
