Kinda like when they made "The Tick" into a live action series (which was a mistake on so many levels ANYWAY) and couldn't use "American Maid" or "De Fledermaus" because they'd been created by the cartoon producers and the live-action producers could only use characters from the comic book (or ones they made up.) The producers of the "Addams Family" films had a similar problem when they claimed to be basing their films on Charles Addams cartoons, but used Cousin Itt and Thing who never appeared in the cartoons. I don't what the final outcome of the court case was.

Anyone else remember that the Britt Reid character from the '60s TV series was allegedly the great, great grandson of John Reid, AKA: The Lone Ranger? True.

They should have had a white guy play Kato just to push Pakar over the edge.

JAY CHOU!! I can't wait to see him as Kato. He is a legend in the Asian community.

But....most of us are not in the Asian community!
Ringmaster mentioned Kato becoming Philippino during WW2, which is interesting and makes sense. My dad told me that where he lived in NYC when WW2 started there were lots of German immigrants and their US born children. He said when the war started you never saw so many people lose their accents quicker in your life and Wolfgang became Willy and Hans became Ed. |

"John" was, per my good friend Jim Harmon, never the name on the original show - the Ranger was unnamed, a commandment from producer Trendle. This was something which was tacked on later. Personally, I always thought the Ranger's name was "Britt" and his nephew named his son after the uncle who was a father to him...and whose silver mine financed the purchase of the Daily Sentinel. *jeep! --Grandpa Chet

I thought Kato started Japanese, turned Korean after WWII, and Chinese after Bruce Lee.

I checked the ol' internet cuz I've no clue, I thought Kato was the guy who wouldn't rat on OJ.
It says that Kato is Japanese (clearly, his family business name was Nippon something or other) until 1939 (radio) when Japan went into China, or what some here refer to "The stuff the Japanese did in China that wasn't nearly as bad as what the evil US did", and Kato became just 'Oriental'. Soon they figured out that rugs are oriental and people are Asian so he became Korean. This caused confusion because people then thought he had become a religious book embraced by a nomadic people in a British controlled area called The Middle East. Being a peaceful religion it was decidec Kato was too violent and many thought he should become American representing the evil violence of the country. Cooler heads prevailed when it was discovered that back then no one would believe an Asian was American so they searched for a region under US control that had Asianish people....thus they discovered the Philippines and in 1941 Kato became a Philippino (or Filippino). This was prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor, or what the libs called "The chickens coming home to roost day". That was it for radio and by the time TV shows were on he was back to being Japanese though I don't think they really made a point of it, maybe they did. Picture this. Grace Park and Maggie Q as The Green Honey and her sidekick Katie....both wearing black leather and lace as they fight their way through stuff. Now, get this, their arch enemy? Cathy Shim in cut off short shorts and a bikini top! Yeah...that would be a movie! |
