I used to think I have a good retention (is it allowed/proper here to post a video for comments?), but I begin to wonder. I know some magicians (not coin magicians) where I live, and they used to tell me that I had a good retention, though I sometimes wonder if it's because they don't do coin magic and has a lower standard for it, I never bothered about that much, until recently when I showed them a simple classic palm transferr and was told that it was as good or even better than my retention... In theory, that shouldn't happen, right?

LOL ya I don think that should happen cos both sleights uses totaly different principles. Retention has the flash which remains in the spec's mind. Classic palm transfer (if its what I think it is, which I think it is - get it?) doesn't utilise the flash of the coin. cheerios
Think outside the box, cos people are all thinking inside now!! - ClouDsss

I do a retention pass that is fine with me. It is what I got from mixing up techniques I've learned from Dan Sylvester, Apollo Robbins, David Stone and Troy Hooser's retention pass.

Magius, Al Goshman did something VERY impressive with a CP toss vanish. His timing gave the pass something like a retention. Our kinesthetic sense sometimes overides our visual sense in these matters.

Arthur Buckley and R. Paul Wilson's added "spin" before a French Drop Vanish gives a good retention of the coin too. R. Paul Wilson calls his variation Revolving French Drop.

I think its amazing how a little variation on a sleight can have so much impact, the spin making a good move great.

The spinning of a coin while doing a french drop is quite old. Actually, anytime you add some type of motion to a coin before you vanish it will add greatly to the illusion!

Why didn't he call it the French Revolution Drop?

What about the slide vanish? I have trouble timing it so it looks natural. Anyone here like to use it?

The slide vanish is a good idea. I use a variation. Shane is hosting a clip.

I think the basis of many good vanishes that have R.O.V. value is the illusion of motion, it allows the spectators mind to fill in the gaps, so to speak. I believe if a vanish has that and the handling looks somewhat natural, then it will work.
