I have read this ad at Hocus Pocus:
Hypnohole & Other Absurdities: Strangely Surreal Items by Dale A. Hildebrandt is written for the intermediate to advanced magician and is sure to provoke thought. Dale A. Hildebrandt walks a different path than most magicians. His knowledge of NLP, hypnosis, Wonder Words, and psychology is evident throughout the book. Those willing to study and practice will soon come away with powerful performance pieces that will astonish audiences. “Applying concepts such as my dual-reality approach is not easy to do well. Dale Hildebrandt’s work is a twisted tap dance along the spine of reason.” -- Kenton Knepper “...Written by an extremely well informed and knowledgeable author, and performer. Dale A. Hildebrandt openly discloses his obviously well constructed routines, and intimate material for the discerning performer. 'hypnohole & Other Absurdities' is more than a book, it is a journey and exploration into bizarre magic, surrealism, subtletly, and a whole lot more... Some of the material will require much thought and absorption on your part... Dale's own stories are different, imaginative and well structured to provoke mystery, audience attention, and will stimulate and maintain interest... I could almost envision a group of select lay people sitting around a table and the performer taking them on a mysterious magical journey through a series of cerebral yet entertaining scenarios, or little cameos, creating atmosphere, with a sometimes theatrical influence, that many of the authors illusions create. Much of the material is very good theatre... I would say the author has a highly developed sense and understanding of psychology. As one progresses through the pages, it soon becomes evident that this clever material is different from the average publication on magic. The book in parts suggests to me, almost a renaissance in magical thinking! In summary, this fascinating book is different to much of what I have read in the past. However for those of you who have a sense of the bizarre, are receptive to the arcane, or are in the least bit intelligent, this work will appeal to you. It will make you think about your own magic and the direction it is moving, and should stimulate you to explore further, what the author has begun. This is not a primer, but in fact an authoritative narration for the more experienced or selective entertainer. Thoroughly recommended.” -- from a lengthy review by David J. O’Connor “Dale A. Hildebrandt is a magician. But, to simply call him a 'magician' does not delve quite far enough he is a mentalist, bizarrist, weerdist, and madman. hypnohole & Other Absurdities is more a manifesto than a book, and more a tour of Mr. Hildebrandt’s mind than a simple collection of tricks. First of all, if you are not familiar with (and in truth proficient at) Wonder Words by Kenton Knepper and other tests of Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP), you need to study those first. A significant portion of Mr. Hildebrandt’s work is derived from these techniques, and you will have to be familiar with their usage before going further. On the other hand, if you are familiar with it, I think you will be delighted with what this book has to offer! The title effect 'hypnohole' is a routine (multiple actually) for making Holes appear in Cards that then move, vanish, jump to other cards, grow, shrink, and vanish in fire. However, hypnohole is much more in the right hands. It is also a study in something called 'Dual Realities' (a staple of NLP). Having read it three times, I can assure you that the audience will walk away amazed at the effect. In summary, if you are a lover of Wonder Words, hypnosis, NLP, and other 'sisters' of mentalism and magic, this book is a must have. If you are not, this book should be considered as a class to take in your 'senior year' after you have the prerequisites completed. Highly recommended to the right person!” -- Jim Keplinger from a review in “Visions” : Strangely Surreal Items by Dale A. Hi highmagic,
I respect you looking for reviews. The book hasn't reached the distributor yet, much less the dealers. Sincerely, Dale A. Hildebrandt |

Welcome to the Café' Dale, and thanks for your answer. Could you tell us if your effects can be performed in close up situations? Unfortunately most dual reality stunts need a parlor/stage setting

When the reviewer is a friend of the magician-developer or when he has some sort of interest in the item being reviewed, he usually says so up front and reveals what that interest might be (and BEFORE delving into his review). Also, for the most part, I have found the reviews to be either "dead-on" or at least accurate enough to give me pause. Mike

Thanks for the answer Dale - will purchase the book.
Off topic:Turk/Dave (still angry about my mistake on the coin sleight in Bobo's?): most of the reviews in Visions get an overhyped 9/10 or 10/10... The bad reviews include only the obvious junk (Ravina's booklets, Brad Manuel's gimmicks etc) |

Lol...I suppose the possibility that the folks at Visions actually LIKE the work produced by the K word escapes you? I think you're looking at it backwards...The K word contributes, therefore they praise his work...more likely, it's that they like his work and, therefore, asked him to contribute.
The simple fact that you don't always agree with their reviews is hardly a reason to slam the entire journal. E
Your EFFECT is only as good as its AFFECT.
