TOP MAGICIAN ‘FOOLS’ PENN AND TELLER AHEAD OF NORTH EAST APPEARANCE

A top UK magician, who was able to fool legendary performers Penn and Teller with his abilities, is to appear live in the North East as part of the South Tyneside International Magic Festival 2011.

Teesside’s John Archer, who performed on ITV show Penn and Teller – Fool Us on Friday, January 7, will be making several appearances at the week-long Magic Festival, which begins its eighth year in South Shields from Monday, March 7.

The comedy magician, who has been performing professionally for the past 13 years, was one of only two illusionists on the 90-minute ITV special to execute a trick that magicial duo Penn and Teller couldn’t explain.

He took five envelopes on stage, one of which contained £100, and asked four audience members to pick an envelope based on the word written on the front of it. At the end of the act John still held the envelope containing the cash - something Penn and Teller said they were “amazed” by.

As a result John will now have the opportunity to open for the world-famous pair at their show at the Rio Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.

After that John, who lives in Eaglescliffe, will be making a number of appearances at the South Tyneside International Magic Festival, including compering the Gala Show at the Customs House theatre on Friday, March 11 – which he has done for the past few years.

The multi-award winning magician will also be delivering a lecture and performing in the special Midnight Show, both of which are open solely to professional magicians and the most dedicated magic fans, as part of the three-day Magic Convention, which runs as part of the festival from March 11 to March 13.

Councillor Tracey Dixon, Lead Member Culture and Wellbeing for South Tyneside Council said: “John Archer has been a firm favourite at the South Tyneside International Magic Festival for the past few years and we are delighted to be welcoming him back following his successful ‘fooling’ of Penn and Teller.

“The Magic Festival is a real highlight in the North East entertainment calendar and I’d urge anyone who is interested in seeing these world-class acts at first hand to buy a ticket now.”

John Archer said: “I absolutely love being a part of the South Tyneside International Magic Festival. It’s the best event of it’s kind in the UK and it’s great fun to both attend and be involved in.”

Tickets for the South Tyneside International Magic Festival’s Gala show compered by John Archer at the Customs House, South Shields on Friday, March 11 are available directly from the theatre on 0191 454 1234 or via http://www.customshouse.co.uk priced from £12.

Tickets for the three-day Magic Convention are available to professional and aspiring magicians by emailing karri.prinn@southtyneside.gov.uk.

We have another great line-up of performers from the USA and UK, some of which in addition to their lecture at the convention will be holding a Master Class.
Master Classes are ideal because sometimes the lecturers would like to spend more time on a particular effect. They are also a way of getting to see and learn from a performer in an intimate setting, and perhaps getting one-on-one instruction on a routine that has been developed and perfected over years, saving you months of trial and experimentation.
We have been running Master Classes for the last six years and would like to invite you to attend one in 2011.

Each Master Class is limited to 20 people

Doug Dyment
Date & time: Thursday 10th March 2011
Venue: Sea Hotel
Cost: £80.00

Trifecta :: an Intensive Workshop
As a special favour to fellow PEA member Martin Duffy, Doug Dyment has agreed to present an unprecedented Intensive Workshop at the 2011 South Shields convention, on Thursday 10 March at 19:30. Doug has never before lectured outside the PEA about his techniques, so this represents a worldwide “first”.

The workshop will focus on three specific performance pieces. Two have previously seen light in Doug’s highly lauded private publications, though this workshop will feature aspects of their methodologies that were withheld from publication, and never previously divulged.

“Very, very usable stuff.” —Ted Karmilovich

The third piece is Doug’s personal method for the Magic Square. This is a new, never before revealed technique for constructing squares “for real” (i.e., with no gimmicks, cribs, advance preparation, partially-memorized squares, or anything other than the mind of the performer). Unlike other methods for magic squares (which have been known to fill small books with their complexity), this revolutionary approach requires no memorization of numbers and no difficult arithmetic (if you can divide an even number by two, you can do this). It works for any target number (including dates, etc.), and produces true magic squares that add to the target total in a minimum of 28 different ways, with no repeated values or numbers that look out of place. Multiple squares can be created with no duplications, even for identical target numbers, making this ideal for walk-around and trade show performances.

“I do suspect that, when it is all over with, Doug will become
the end-all resource for magic square work” —Banachek

Should time and interest permit, there will also be a discussion and explanation of the DAO Cycle, an optimal sequential stack for playing cards that is deceptively random in appearance and decidedly rapid in usage, yet no more difficult to learn than the Si Stebbins method.

“Stuff that the real world pro’s are using.” —Lior Manor

This 2½–3 hour workshop is open to all serious, intelligent students. As unpublished material will be divulged, it will be necessary for attendees to sign a standard nondisclosure agreement. Please bring a regular pack of playing cards and a writing implement.
Lecture notes and worksheets are included.

“Excellent, thought provoking material.” —Larry Becker

Jon Stetson
Date & time: Sunday 13th March 2011
Venue: Customs House
Cost: £60.00
This is a special opportunity to learn how to enhance your livelihood . Jon will give and teach his “Personal Intuitive Trainer” demonstration that he gives to corporate clients and His “Ladies Only Psychic Parties”. He will put you through the class enabling you to learn the best way to teach it and all uses of the Pendulum. This is a class that can be taught to corporate clients and even schoolchildren. Each person will receive a copy of Jon’s personal Intuitive trainer DVD.

Jon is also going to be sharing his thoughts on marketing. Secrets that have made him one of America’s most successful corporate entertainers. Stetson will answer any and all questions asked by the attendees on how to navigate through these challenging economic times. Jon will also give each person a set of Marketing DVD’s that were sold for $150.00.

Paul Vigil
Date & time: Sunday 13th March 2011
Venue: Customs House
Cost: £60.00

From Tricks to MAGIC
Elevating ‘Cute’ to Profound
or
Composition, Design & Impact in Modern Performance

In this workshop, Paul will provide in-depth analysis of showpieces from his own contemporary conjuring demonstrations; he'll be discussing previously released material as well as some unpublished effects, but his aim is not merely to reveal methods—he will use these routines as models to discuss principles of magic so that you can further refine your own fantastic visions.

Now that all of his material is no longer available (and because he has the inclination to shy away from lecturing) this may be your only chance to learn some of these select secrets.

The workshop is intended for those who are in the intermediate to advanced stages of the Art. Those who are familiar with the basic sleights, psychology, and subtlety of magic will benefit most from this seminar.

Topics covered may include:
• self-working vs. sleight of hand
• layering of method
• approach and conviction
• order of effects
• anticipation/surprise
• gambling demonstrations(?)

This will be one of the very few times Paul has lifted the curtain on his material; therefore, attendees will be required to sign a no-disclosure agreement.
All serious students are welcome.

Nicholas Einhorn
Date & time: Sunday 13th March 2011
Venue: Customs House
Cost: £60.00

Nick Einhorn is one of the UK’s leading magicians. His success as a close-up magician, cabaret performer and trade show worker ensures a jam-packed diary all year long, with events all over the world.

This maser class is a unique opportunity to spend some time with Nick and learn the real work on some of his favourite material used to GUARENTEE amazement every time.

Of course, learning cool and practical magic is always good, but learning how to earn a great living from your choice of performing material is the real key to anyone seeking to perform magic for money.

During the course of this workshop Nick will reveal how he has managed to cultivate his business WITHOUT spending huge sums of money advertising and WITHOUT making endless cold calls every week.

If you are, or wish to be, performing magic for money then you owe it to yourself and your business to attend this workshop.

This workshop is an investment in your development as a working performer and a legitimate tax-deductible expense for your business!
