Guys, we're working on a magic TV special for Pakistani TV - the concept is exactly like Blaine's specials. After the special, we plan to create more specials and then eventually have a full season of a show. But for now, we're focusing on the first special and making it the best it can be - it's a 1 hour special and 40 minutes without commercials. I want to choose the card effects for this before I move onto the non-card effects.
After thinking about this for some time, here are the card effects I've decided to do, and in this order: Invisible Deck Dr. Daley's Last Trick Ultimate 3 Card Monte Compression - From the last Blaine special. The effect was never released but it's nothing new - it's a basic application of the Inflated Deck principle. Branded Twilight Angels What do you think of these? They would ofcourse be scattered across the special - there would be non-card stuff in between these. I think 5 or 6 card effects for a 1 hour special is good. If you guys were creating a TV special along the lines of the Blaine specials, what card effects would you consider doing? While we're on the subject, what non-card effects would you consider doing? I'm very, very excited about this project! And I'd love to hear your input. Thanks! - Sohaib |

5 or 6! Wow
That is a lot of card magic. Assuming your 60 minute program is 45 minutes of content from yourself, I would assume each tricks takes up 3-5 minutes. Which is 15-30 minutes of card material. That seems like a lot of card material. I would suggest exploring other effects with other items. Glad to hear magic is making it on television! J |

If it were me, I would totally avoid using gaffs for the following reasons:
1) Effects with gaffed cards are the first things sold in any magic shop. 2) A gaff could easily go wrong or be shot wrong. This could cost you in terms of paying people for their time AND could have exposure problems. Some of the effects you mention are either too long or don't paint very good visuals. Here are two examples of the stuff I would consider: Triumph-- done Vernon's way. The visual sell you get when the telescoped deck is ribbon spread is perfect and I've never seen a version other than Vernon's that has that has a better visual. It does require a table, but you could "arrange" to come across a table during the show. Card Warp-- use Darwin Ortiz' idea of "The Card Warp Deck" in "Darwin Ortiz At The Card Table". Again, another huge visual sell. Regarding the Invisible Deck-- it's been oversold at Magic Shops and in this country would be spotted easily by every "wannabe" that's been in a magic shop. This also puts you in the position of having the effect exposed by any news reporter that has $20 to spend. HOWEVER-- over the years I've collected a few ways to get around the recognition. If you'd like to discuss those, PM me to avoid exposure problems and I'll send you a few ideas. Most of the methods are springboards, i.e. you can use them as a basis for other presentations. Two Disclaimers: I need to mention that I am not at all familiar with the culture or the magic scene in your country so some or all of the above advice may not work for you. I do not know how skilled your performer(s) is, but if they're better at using gaffs than they are at Sleight of Hand, it'd probably be better to use the gaffs. SEY |

If I were you I would avoid using anything that's appeared in the David Blaine specials. Be original, there's plenty of excellent effects which are just as powerful.

Wow! great list of effects for the first show. I saw Paperclipped performed on tv recently and it was excellent. Shadow coins looks like an excellent non card effect.
Good luck Sohaib. -octave |

Watching it on the Blaine special was a true Astonishment moment for me - it was my favorite card effect in the special. And it was my introduction to the inflated deck principle - maybe we can do a different effect with the principle, as this was a pretty basic application of it. Best, - Sohaib Quote:

As mentioned by Steve above, I love the Vernon Triumph. One that I have been doing lately for lack of a table is John Bannon's "Last Man Standing". An AMAZING display, and completely in the hands...might fit the bill if you are looking for a triumph effect with no table. It's in his Dear Mr. Fantasy Book...a wealth of knowledge.
