Following the rash of recent posts from the U.K. and the amount of newbies who's interest seems to primarily about doing Street Hypnosis, I thought it would be interesting to pose this question to the actual Stage Hypnotists on this forum. While my interest is primarily regarding Stage Hypnotists in the states, I'm sure others may offer answers as well.
My question is, where primarily do you perform? In what markets and types of venues? It seems much in the U.K. is taking place on the streets or in pubs, but what about here in the states? What markets and areas are you having the most success with? |

Good question.
As one does at the end of a year, I've been looking back over this year's work. Stage shows here in New Zealand over the last 12 months: Corporate clients (Product launches, brand promotions, after-seminar entertainment etc.) : Various hotels, International Convention Centre, town hall, art gallery, a marquee in a heritage park, sports bars, a brewery. Fundraisers: High Schools, Workingmen's, MSA and RSA (retired Services) Clubs (greater than 250 capacity,) Small Theatres (less than 200 capacity,) Sports and recreation centres. Private parties: RSA Clubs, Bar Function Rooms, The Polytechnic College. I also find that if I organise a small number of stage shows each year to which the general public are admitted, it keeps my "name out there" in events listings and on posters. This leads to more inquiries from companies and individuals. Those public shows (with varying degrees of organisational success i.e. a couple of cancellations) have been: Multiple shows at an entertainment club, a bar venue known for music gigs and a Jazz Club I have two different sized PA systems and dual wireless mics (headset and handheld) which I offer as an option at additional cost if required and I'm thinking of investing in a basic portable lighting rig over the coming months too. I know this was a question about stage shows but I also offer a roving hypnosis option. (With one or two exceptions, most of the "street" hypnosis videos you see around are either unpaid experimental stuff or linked to a training course.) These roving engagements have been at: A showground for a major outdoor festival, a racecourse, a wildlife park, a winery, hotels and bars (large and small.) I work through two agents as well as direct and most clients already know whether they want stage or roving, but a handful will either ask me to price both, or they will give me their "context" and ask what I can do to fit in with that. What about you Mindpro? |

Thanks, very good explanation. You are correct, as it was my reflecting on the past year and looking at the gigs already booked for 2011 that brought me to pose that question.
As for myself, I have for years been doing corporate and schools, and have been adding theater shows (mostly self-produced, but a handful of being produced either by the venues themselves or by a promoter) which I've been enjoying. I typically, for eleven years now done a spring tour which I start in March and it takes me through mid-June. This consists of primarily schools, with fill-in or pickup dates in theaters and comedy clubs. Then I go right into my fair and festival season from mid-June through September. I'm lucky to be home a total of two, maybe three weeks at best from March - September. I'm considering moving to more of a permanent summer run in a tourist area rather than working the fair and festival market so much during the summer months (it always seems like my performances are downwind from the 4H (livestock) barns - smells!), but tourism here is taking a huge hit due to the economy, so I may wait until it rebounds a bit more. I'm one of those performers that actually loves being on the road, loves hotels, and the travel. I also love to work, as it keeps me sharp, creative and out of trouble. I too work with about six agencies and a handful of corporate event planners, promoters and other bookers. I used to take whatever work came my way just to work and make a decent living, where over the past five years or so I have been much more selective and have a good deal of longtime accounts and venues that rebook me regularly. I also do motivational speaking too. I've been approached pretty aggressively by two cruise lines who have been very interested since I am very versatile to them (stage hypnosis, mentalism, handwriting analysis and the motivational presentations) but have declined their offers of six and thirteen week runs because I'm unwilling to bump or cancel longtime clients (some of which I've had for over twenty five years) and the tours. Maybe if I choose to slow down or stay off the road in the future this option will be more appealing to me. Since my first gig in 1976, I've never missed, been late to or canceled a performance. There ya have it in a nutshell. |
