I have received the following request and was wondering if any of you could help:
"I hope you can help. I am looking for an author who wrote at least one book about a detective who is also a magician. I read it years ago and can not remember the author. He is single and lives with two maiden aunts. It seem to me it is based in the early 1900s, give or take, and may be set in England or maybe Boston. The two maiden aunts are also involved either in the circus or a magician's act... This has been driving me crazy for years! I seem to think it is the first book of a series and he uses his escape artist skills to free himself from a locked cabinet or something..." Thanks in advance.

Mark, you may want to check with Michael Canick here in the States for the info. He's a collector of magic fiction and may be able to provide the lead you're looking for. Sorry, I don't have his website in my file but I'm sure a search on google.com will give it to you.

Clayton Rawson, aka "The Shadow" wrote many titles with a magician/detective.
Hope that helps!
I am whatever I am to you.

You are right, I stand corrected! I must be getting old! The point was that I believe Mark Farrar was probably referring to Clayton Rawson. Thank you for the correction!

I don't recall any maiden aunts in the Rawson novels. The date would also be rather late (mainly late '30s, early '40s, I believe). This is intriguing. If you work out who this mystery author is, I'd love to know...

Thanks for all of the information.
I have read a lot of the Clayton Rawson books, but that particular plot didn't ring any bells with me. Maybe I need to go back and read them again?
