I am interested in your views on phone service these days. There are so many options available, and I wonder if the old "land line" is really better, or just force of habit? Does anyone here run their business from a cell phone? Is there any advantage to a "land line" any more? It seems to me that a cell is always with you, and just as reliable as land lines.
How about services like "Magic Jack"? It seems like this could be a great if you needed just an answering machine-type service. In this age of free long distance included in most home and cell packages, is there any significant value in having toll-free 800 and 888 numbers for your business? Are people more inclined to call a 800 or 888 number any more? Does it add to a "professional" appearance or image? I look forward to hearing your thoughts. |

My friend Dennis carries his cell phone with him and if it's legally possible to answer it when it rings,he will.
Instead of getting a machine the client gets Dennis. He is ready to talk about their needs and set up a follow up call to get it on the calendar. I have both lines and so does Dennis but he makes MUCH better use of his cell than I do. I think he has it set up so that if his land line doesn't pick up it transfers his call to the cell. How you set up your system and if you answer is as important as the equipment you have. Good luck. The clueless -Mary Mowder |

I Changed all my marketing material to my Cell Number... when people want information on a show, I want to be able to answer there questions right away before they have a chance to call the next magician in the phone book. As far as 800 and 888 numbers are concerned I think there is no need for one. I believe if you do a search you will find some good info on this. Dennis Michael might want to chime in on this one, if my memory is correct I believe it was him that stated that he gave his up because of the expense. There is also a good article here on the Café about a phone service through google. That is FREE. Again it has been a while since I read it so you will have to do a search to get all the details but what I can remember is that you sign up for this service, make up a number and when they dial it it will ring to your current number (cell or land-line) or if it is after hours you can have it go straight to answer machine. (again do a search in the Tricky Business section Some good info there on this very subject)

Land Line audio quality is still far superior to cell phones. Also, caller ID works better (e.g. I see the name of the person) on the land line.
I have my land line set up to ring both the land line and my cell phone (as opposed to straight call forwarding.) This way, if I am in my office, I can pick up the land line (and save my cell minutes), otherwise I can pick up the call on my cell. I also have unlimited calling on my land line, so I can make cold calls all day, and not have to worry about minutes. |

800 numbers are still very, very popular, and still used by businesses everywhere. I'd suggest getting some type of toll-free line and using that.
