Okay....I thought I'd post this here in the hopes of getting some useful suggestions.
I'm working on getting Lydia's Carnival Sideshow up and running monthly in Salem, MA. In doing so I'm working with some folks that have not performed before, so I'm also helping them hone their acts, some of whom, such as a hula hooper, need to use music during their act. To be honest, I'm HORRIBLE with music. However, I know full well that the goth, techno and thrash music they are selecting really doesn't fit in here. Anyone have suggestions of music to use during the show here and there? --T |

Hula hoop? Maybe a hula? If you're going for kitsch, forget goth, techno, and thrash.

It really has to do with what design elements you are using with the show. If you are evoking classic carnival/circus imagery, then you might want to lean towards the music traditional to this. Things like calliope/band organ music or the circus band of Merle Evans (or the South Shore Windjammer Band). What is a nice idea for freshing this kind of thing up is to give this kind of music to a local club DJ and have them do a remix of the music. If done well, you get the best of both worlds, yesterday and today. For a hula hoop act, having the DJ do a remix of Hawaiian music would be great.
My brother in law did a bunch of remixes for the preshow of Carnival Knowledge and it played well. |

Best Hula-Hoop act I ever saw dressed like Daisy from the Dukes of Hazzard and played "Cotton eye Joe" fer the music....Technically it was not the nessasarily the Best act as far as tricks, but definitely the most entertaining due to a High energy song folks knew and a Hot "Daisy Duke" if you will...
I'm not tellin you to use this Idea as much as I am givin a example of costuming and music.. heres the tune: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ddgyg_5FF_0

Great ideas, all...thanks so much.
Yes, Harley....I IMMEDIATELY threw out the goth, thrash, metal and shred....as I want it as accessible as possible to as wide an audience as possible. We're doing crazy stuff....no reason we should be alienating the audience in any way via the music. I getcha, Jim....perfect example of putting together a solid routine. Thanks, Todd....I'll try and scare up a DJ and see what they can do with some calliope and other carnival music. Any other suggestions? Keep em coming! --T |

I always liked the Brechtian approach- Music that contrasts what you are doing (At least for an act or two). Cute music for something horrific, dramatic music for something cute...
Hula hooping to "Night on Bald Mountain" would be sweeeeet! Just brainstorming... G |

Hire a show organist and drummer LIVE MUSIC IS BEST and calliope is always good for a bally hoo..especially if you take the calliope to the streets and let the whole town know your show is opening there.

Hello Todd:
YES!! haha I almost forgot about that. The Johnny Maddox Ragtime Piano gave a happy atmosphere to the show. I sure miss those grind shows of the past. ROD |

See if you can track down some electro swing
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electroswing I perform hula hoops and I use music from that style all the time it suits hoops fantastically. Swing in general is great for performing hoops too. A lot of the electro swing coming out of Europe includes sections of old swing records which is great for setting the scene and the modern styling on the songs mean also help to satisfies the taste of the younger part of your audience.
