I've read Book Yourself Solid by Michael Port and it is a great book but THE BEST book on how to get gigs is "The Wealthy Speaker" by Jane Atkinson. She talks about booking yourself as a speaker but speaking engagements and entertainment is very similar. She tells you exactly what she did to get a speaker booked from 2 gigs a year to over 80 gigs at a minimum of $10,000 per engagement.

Well, I like Dave Dee's stuff a lot.
I will give Dave a testimonial -- and it's one I've given in person as well. Dave saved my life. If it wasn't for Dave Dee, I would've been yet another worker bee that got caught in the maelstrom of the current recession. Before Dave Dee, I had no idea how to actually book gigs. I had performed for years, but mostly through the help of agents and a few that I happened to luck into through folks I knew. Dave taught me how to create systems to generate leads; how to write compelling sales copy; the importance of thinking of your magic business like a "business," with real practical information on running that business - like creating a business plan, how to run ads, knowing who you are targeting with your services, etc. I now read every single thing I can get my hands on relative to marketing and sales - from everyone, whether they're selling services, products, or what-have-you. I absolutely recommend you do exactly the same. Nevertheless, without the original course Dave produced ("Ultimate Insider Secrets Course for Magicians" - now the "90 Day Market Mastery System") I would've remained at Microsoft and ... inevitably, trash canned with all my former co-workers when the empire shut down the entire Simulations Product Unit. Left without skills to market myself, yet another commodity facing a very difficult economy. That's not the case with my life or career right now. I give Dave a huge percentage of the credit and thanks. He opened my eyes. Dave had and still has a hugely giving heart for truly helping people succeed in living out their dreams. Since taking over the Magic Marketing Center, I've tried my best to live up to that standard.

I have books, audio tapes, and VHS tapes dealing with several professional speakers; Zig Ziglar, Dale Carnegie, Les Brown, Brian Tracy, Tony Alessandra, (just to name a few). I have listened to audio from several magicians too. I noticed some (not all) magicians are copying from the professional speakers. Recently I read a post too good to be true from another magician. I feel certain ones are not being honest by making the amount they mentioned, so they rather try scamming other magicians. That is how they are really making their money. Now remember, I did not say all the magicians selling marketing kits, just certain ones. So certain magician marketing kits I have I will give credit to because of the additional information dealing with magician marketing ideas the professionals do not speak of.

I've purchased Jack Turk's materials around Aug or Sep 2010. It contains some excellent material. But don't fool youself. This course is no joke. You need to be prepared to roll up your sleeves and work. I have a solid show. I'm no where near where I want to be, but I'm good enough to get consistent positive feedback from customers. With that said, I spend about 80% of my available time for Magic on marketing. Since I began professionally in May of 2010, I've been doing on average one show each week for the last 3 months. In about another 6-8 weeks, I expect to have implemented as much of Jack's course as I want to focus on for this stage of my p/t career in Magic.
I also just purchased Jim Snack's course based on recommendations here on the Café. I like to always have stuff to listen to as I drive and material to read when I have a few minutes. I know, I know...I'm a glutton for punishment. Jim's going to put me to work too (pun intended). The bottom line is that no matter how much information we accumulate it is all worthless unless we dedicate ourselfs to DOING what these awesome men teach. [Note to Dean....be on the lookout. I'll likely be heading your way too, once I digest what these brothers have loaded on me.] |

Why would you go back 4 years to find a post to say "yes you did" and take away from a thread and offer no value in this thread to begin with? Kevin I know y'all could add a lot of value on this topic. Not sure the purpose of that post.
I find it funny people lurk on a thread and jump in to find fault vs jumping in to add value. Just my observation. I would love to have seen at least a thought on this thread |

On a serious note and to add to this discussion as Jonathandupree asks...here is one book that has done tons for us.
Marketing Outrageously, by Jon Spoelstra. Jon is also know for the book, Ice to the Eskimos. Jon is known for his sports marketing, which is a unique industry, similar in uniqueness to our industry. In one of his sales pitches to season tickets holders that were dropping like flies, he Fedex'ed rubber chickens. This generated tons of free publicity and over $2.5 million in revenue. For the record, Mark Cuban, owner of the Dallas Mavericks digs into this book time and time again for motivation. In another part of the book he tells the story of a marketing department complaining they didn't have the budget...this was AFTER Jon was generating $3 for every $1 spent. So how much do you budget in the MIDDLE of this scenario?...every dollar you can get your hands on. He asks questions that we should be asking ourselves..."What is it going to take to dominate this industry?" "What is it going to take to make $100,000, $500,000, etc. His premise is that you can’t get exceptional sales results with mediocre marketing. Our industry is FILLED with mediocre marketing. Go to a buyer's trade show and watch as 98% of them stand there handing out flyers and MAYBE have a video running on a TV, or even worse a laptop. Then find the 2% of the people that are doing something DIFFERENT. Many threads here at the Café talk about being original, having your own material, show etc. Yet when it comes to marketing your act...most everyone is the same. DO something different, BE something different. The subtitle to Jon's book is: How to Increase Your Revenue by Staggering Amounts. IF that is what you & I are after, then THAT is what WE SHOULD BE DOING and NOT just treading along as SO MANY DO. I truly hope that helps and inspires just one person. Kevin

Kevin, that sounds like a great book. Thanks.
Let me add that it's important to keep the fire fueled. Reading such books and success stories can help. A business person should always be searching for motivation. Without it you will fail. Without motivation a business is no more than a poor clock punching job. Without motivation your education is useless, you not going anywhere. Like they say, "If you care at all, you'll get some results. If you care enough, you'll get incredible results." Tom

I've implemented some of the material in Jack Turk's course. I'm a part-timer and my available time to implement all that I want from his course is much less than I'd like. However, here are the changes that resulted from my efforts following his advice over about a six month period:
1. Bookings up from 1x per month to 4x per month on average. 2. Fees up from $100 per show to $149 per show for bdays...other shows vary. I've read through Jim Snacks's course in the last month and that's inspired more improvements also. I three shows last Saturday and am on target for at least doubling my income over last year. @ Kevin...thanks for the tip on Marketing Outrageously. I'll get to that after digesting and implementing this other material. For many that I know, Magic is a hobby that they enjoy, and that is fine. However, when I decided to make it a p/t business, I quickly learned that it isn't the right business for the feint of heart, timid or lazy. It takes s a lot of work ...but I LOVE it! |

For the close-up worker, I like Lou Serrano's course. It's chock full of great practical advice. I just started studying it, and have used a few techniques that have already increased my business.
