Bobo, p468, describes the effect of threading a copper and a silver disk onto a string, cover with a hank, and then ask the spectator to name a "coin", and it drops off.
This uses a gaffed silver and copper disk (or coin) set. Is this gaffed set sold anywhere? I have a similar set of disks, called "Miracle discs", but both are the same color. There is also "disk escape" by Kreis Magic, but the disks are painted different colors. I would prefer unpainted, but different color metals. Thanks; John

What size disks are allowed? This can be done without gaff disks with harness ring type disks, i.e the hole is at least an inch across

My hung, drawn and quartered set uses a quarter and a half (American), no copper.

Also, I prefer different colors, and holes in American coins seems illogical. The use of disks, washers, or Chinese coins seems less suspicious. Thanks; John

I think holes in American coins is odd, not to say suspicious.

Another approach is Hey John, I fell for the hype with the Joker Chinese Coin Penetration and purchased it; and although it is very well made, you will have to switch the 'visible penetrating coin' for another prior to inspection. Also my coin does not always "seat" (maybe 1 out of 8 times) properly post penetration then it looks akward. Not sure if that helps you or not... Regards, Barrett James

The gimmicked coin set mentioned in this thread is actually quite old. It is my understanding that similar coins were made early in the 1900s but I don't believe their use was magic related. I believe they were "secret" storage for notes, photos, etc. much like a locket. I have a set in my museum at http://www.atlantismagic.com/albums/albu......0105.htm that was absolutely used for magic although I don't believe it too be as old as the coins would lead one to believe (Columbian Exposition 1893 and Large Penny 1852). They arrived in an estate lot with items dating to the thirties and forties. Also pictured in my site is the Adams version of the coin on string which operated without the use of gimmicks, much the same as your normal ring on and off effects. I have seen English sets with older coins as well so I suspect the effect is from the early 1900s but I am not certain when.

There are Chinese coins with a sh**l in half dollar size. The Chinese sh**l fits over a half dollar, so...

I was curious as I looked in the only book I know of by Bobo and could not find the page your are speaking of as the page count in that book does not go up that high. As I only have Modern Coin Magic, Dover edition, Is this the New Modern Coin Magic book that you are referencing or another one all together?

Modern Coin Magic is actually the original book by Bobo that lost it's copyright and was reprinted by Dover without remuneration to Bobo or Bobo's estate. New Modern Coin Magic is the later book published by Bobo and includes the original but has all new material starting at about pg. 293. I am sticking with Hung, Drawn and Quartered for now even though the coins are the same color. On the issue of Chinese coins, I don't know of any S&S set made out of Chinese coins, but if it did exist (or could be made custom), then so long as the holes are small enough and the string large enough, I can't see why this wouldn't work. Instead of S&S though, my preference would be the method used by Mark Mason in H,D&Q over the standard locking S&S for this effect - so that the coins "seat" properly and for the additional routines you can do with the H,D&Q (also easy reset, no b**g ring). I think your points about the "logic" of a drilled coin v. a chinese coin with a ready made hole and the issues of the different colors of the coins are really good points and I would be surprised if Mark might not want to produce a chinese coin option for H,D&Q (or perhaps African/Chinese?). I just saw you offer of a set for sale. I'll assume that after 5 years have passed, this is no longer for sale
Yet, does anyone have an "in" with Mark Mason, and can put a "bug" in his ear? I have a $3 set of Miracle Disks that "locks", if the HD&Q effect is more easily reset, it may be worth the extra expense. John
