If you go here, you'll see that it's all made with paper mache.
If you go to the two links, you can see samples of my work with a mache base and apoxie sculpted details. I am not even a sculptor. I've briefly described my method in the above posts http://frankiemalachi.com/vent-figures/ http://frankiemalachi.com/marionette/ All you need is a table space!

I've done both with my preference leaning towards wood, but then I enjoy woodcarving otherwise as well. As soon as I get my workshop reorganized, I'm planning on carving myself a new figure. As far as having a figure like other people have, you're right, there are a lot of others out there that are from the same makers that look pretty much basically alike and it's not an issue. Really, the only time I see it being an issue for someone is if they going outside their local area, traveling and performing and especially if aiming towards the "big time", then I can see the importance of having a unique looking figure that doesn't look like everyone else's.

It won't cost you a lot of money to make one.Clay is relatively inexpensive, paper is easily accessible and free.Glue is cheap.Sculpting tools can be found around the house like a scrap piece of wood,a pencil,a penknife,etc...
All is takes is time and creativity.I am making two more vent figures and taking my leisure time to work on it. The first step is usually the tougest step.So go fer it!

I understand what you are saying, but as of the moment I am unemployed. I'm behind in my mortgage trying to keep the banker foreclosure sharks at bay. Struggling to keep the lights and heat on in my house. Even a few cents right now for me is like a million dollars.
But I can dream!

Doug, I hope this new year brings you some relief, but in the meantime, you can just store all this info away for when the time comes you are able to try your hand at building your own figure.
