I'm really new to coin magic, and I got, in change, from my local pizza shop 3 Susan B. Anthony dollars (I think that's who it is!) I like they way they look. Do you think they're good to practice my sleights on? I notice they are not milled on the edges. What about the size? Do you put anything on your hands to help with slippage when palming? Sorry these are such basic questions. I've been involved with magic for a long time and always shied away from coin sleights. Finally decided it was time to make the plunge--bought Roth's intro video. Thanks in advance for your replies.

I believe the Susan B Anthony dollars were more silver in color. There are some new dollar coins with the portrait of Sacagwea that have a bronze/gold color.
They make good contrast to quarters.
...to all the coins I've dropped here

if you want to start to practice on palming, you might want to start with half dollars. Those Sacagwea coins are the same size as the Suzi B's, which is the slightest bit larger than a quarter. They definatly do make good contrast, similar to an english penny and a half dollar. So those are some good things to remember if you actually are gunna use them.

As you pointed out, actually what I have are Sacagwea dollars, not Susan B. Anthony. Are these bigger than Half dollars? And when I'm starting out, is it easier to palm the larger or the smaller coin? Again, excuse my general ignorance on this.
Thanks, landmark

Just as an FYI, if you find out that it is a Sacagwea gold dollar, there are gaffs of these coins out there... I think that the Scotch and Soda effect with the gold dollar is called vodka and orange juice.

The Sacagwea coins are about midway in size between a quarter and a half dollar. I find them a bit easier to palm than half dollars, but you should use out whatever works for you.

I heard the it is better to learn things with big cards and small coins, because it is more difficult and builds up your skill.

I use the gold dollars and Susan B.'s all the time. The contrast is good and the size is right for my hands. I throw a quarter into the mix and do Peter Marucci's ungimmicked S&S.
BTW, there is also a magnetic version of Vodka and Orange Juice. |

I'm noticing as I learn to Classic palm properly that I'm much better with my left hand than my right, even though I'm a righty. Is that usual, favoring one hand over the other? Of course, I understand that I must become proficient with both!

Yeah, well, heres the deal. Your better with whatever you pratice with. I can backpalm a coin in my right hand without thinking, however I can do a double coin roll with my left hand easier. I can muscle palm and classic better with my right. One handed shuffle? better using my left hand as well as various cuts etc. Just whichever hand you pratice most in or more comfortable in gets better. Good luck and stick with it.

Progress report: I've been working with the Sac dollars and quarters for palming. I just got a half dollar in change and find it much easier to palm.
Thanks all for the encouragement. The Roth video is wonderful! landmark
