Ummm how do so many 'magicians' keep messing up this trick?
If you don't know which one the nail/knife is under then don't slam your hand on it! I just can't comprehend the stupidity that it takes to say 'well, I don't know which one it is so its 50/50 that I will get hurt. Ill take my chances' Remember that the SHOW must go on but the TRICK doesn't! |

OOOOOUUUUCCCCHHH! Exactly why I don't do this. I used to juggle knives...I learned not to do that too.

OMG, another one? I thought people would've learnt by now... This Routine has become the standard by which we can judge basic competence. Sadly enough... You can just tell whether a Magician has read the instructions and practiced a trick or not by this. At least this part... "When in doubt, don't do it." Err on the side of caution. It is just a Magic Show, really. Well, I predict more mishaps... Sad state of affairs.

But about 3 months later, I was totally healed, and had full mobility in my right hand again. Phew! Christopher

Chris your a lucky Man my friend. Glad to hear your hand is fully functional.
This routine never did anything for me. That gut was so calm I thought it was part of the trick, I was waiting to see if he made his hand heal in front of her. Thanks for sharing Ben. Tim

How can the 'method fail'?
Please don't take any offense as I am not sure of the method you used. But if it was me, I would have 2 methods that support each other as to make this work every time. I would not leave anything to chance. I would have the holder of the nail/knife marked and the cover that goes over it. The nail/knife would be permanently in place so it couldn't be separated from its mark. The cover would also be marked. I would probably also make sure the covers would lock into place so that once they were set they couldn't be undone. Then all I would have to do is make sure the marked cover is still with the marked holder and I would know where the sharp object is. I would also have a 'spotter' in the audience to signal me if something was wrong that I wasn't aware of. Like tampering by the onstage assistant. My spotter would signal where the nail/knife was and if they disagreed with what the marks were telling me then the tricks off. Or if they signaled the participant messed around with the cover or the nail, then the tricks off. Only if the marked items and my spotter agreed would I proceed. But that's just me and I tend to be a bit paranoid. Prob the best solution to this is to not use a dangerous object at all. But something else like an egg. Maybe instead of risking your health you could smash a bag over someones head. they will cringe each time as they expect a runny egg to come sliming down on them. And if it goes wrong, that's all that will happen. Dry cleaning is a lot cheaper than medical bills. |

I was wondering the same thing...
I know when I had my "stupid moment" I was not that calm and collected...tho' I did handle things quite well under the circumstances. I also know that blood was spurting out all over the place and not just a light ooze like we saw in this video. Guess we'll never know...????

If you're using real blades I don't think there can be a foolproof method.
As several people have pointed out on similar threads, the very fact that the performer know where the blade is, is what can mess him up. The brain registers that cup as "important," and in a distracted moment, the hand goes to the "important" cup. I think it's a lousy effect, but please if people insist on doing it, there are other methods that only simulate the dangerous aspects.

I can't watch these effects anymore. It creates way to much stress for me. I imaging many years ago, it was similar with the bullet catch. I understand some may get off on the tension and or stress but I do not not care for it any longer. There apparently is a flaw in a few of these methods that so many have been injured.I can't believe it's just a brain freeze with all thee folks impaling themselves, or is it?

I guess the brain freeze is something I never thought about. So no matter what their is a chance of failure in that aspect.
I guess the only safe bet is to use non threatening items. |

If I was ever to ever perform this type of effect I would use what Scott Alexander came up with as the method. You can't go wrong with it and there is never a chance of Hmmmm I hope I'm right.

His composure is astounding. Mad props to him for that. Funny how stabbing a knife through your hand is an anti-climax.
