When performing for larger tables in a corporate setting do you prefer 3 Fly type of effects or the more standard s***l Coins Across into the spectators hands?
Whilst I agree magic in the spectators hands is the strongest, I feel 3 Fly is the better option as it allows the whole table to see the magic as everything happens at chest height and at the fingertips rather than waist height and on the flat of the hands. Although I have stated my preference, I would like to hear other peoples opinions and the reasoning behind it. Thanks in advance for any replies. |

Speaking of hearing, one can use a glass to make this more of and auditory experience. The noise of the coin arriving can be heard by all.
I have also had a person stand to act as a "taller/more visible table". Coins can go across with variation..change to another coin..ala Kams- The Goblet..or stop on a spectators say shoulder or outside jacket pocket...can you say the Art of body loading... Harris have coins will travel....

My favorite coins across routine (using a s...l) is the one that Mr Roth performs in the ultimate coin magic series.. I've also added the goshman pinch move to it, so I can show both hands all the time..
I also like very much the coins through the table using a glass.. Each time you cover them with the glass, they travel one by one under the table.. This is the most visual routine I know. (again using a s...l)

I like the idea of having the spectator stand to make for a taller table and the body loading idea's aswell.I agree I think Mr Roth's coins across is very good and so is coins through table using a glass although not very practical for a large table with a big center piece in the middle of the table which tends to be the case at most corporate functions.

Then in an effort to give everyone a better view and to be a bit more fair, perform a VCA. I think doing the closed hands coins across first, makes the VCA a bit stronger. Hope this helps Joe

If interested, the effects and handlings that started it all, Jonathan Townsend's Coins Across, is available to Genii Magazine subscribers online in the September 2006 issue of Genii. Not for the faint of heart (or of fingers!) but a tremendous article that describes the creative thinking behind the effects that begat all the 3-Fly routines that have flown by since around 1980! I just found and read it and it is very interesting stuff. (Thanks JT! )
Thank you. Jim |

Mystre71 come to think of it I think others have used the same idea as yours to good effect aswell thanks for your input,Dave although you mentioned the great effects in your lecture notes you didn't say what your preference was, with your valuable experience and skill level I'd love to hear your thoughts on the original question if you have the time.

Hi Warren,
Sorry man I thought I did! Depends On the kind of Table! Three fly will work great for a long table where you have no bad back angles! For a big round Table Coins to glass Works great becase you have added sound to the routine, As thay hear the coins fall into the glass! And the angles are better! But some times it is not possable to get everyone at the table to watch you at the same time! There Is just to much going on! And if food is being Eaten by some of the people that is the thing thay are looking at the most! And you mite have to work the table a few people at a time! That is when you should do the Routine in the persons hands! So you just have to do what fits best at that time! There is no one size fits all thing here! Ok hope this helps! Latter. |

Thanks for the comments Dave and the interesting points you've made regarding if you have the attention of the entire table or not,as you quite rightly say there are many things to take into consideration and of course only so much you can carry in your pockets
Thanks again for everybodies comments I found them all interesting and informative. |
