I have created a little packet trick that is playing well for me and getting good responses from other magicians.
I've also created a DVD with full instructions and explanations. I'd like to find a publisher (or maybe distributor) for it. I'm quite willing to settle for a modest royalty. More important to me are the following: (1) That the trick get produced and packaged in a high quality, reliable manner. (2) That orders get quickly and efficiently handled in a reliable manner. (3) That it get distributed into the market with reasonable completeness. (4) That it be reasonably priced. There is a demonstration video on youtube here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ly0mCLxMUZI I'd love to have a publisher take it off my hands and do a professional job with its production, but I'd be willing to consider a deal with a distributor where I created some hand crafted sets to see what the initial sales were like.

Yeah I tried Alakazam. Got a nice note back from Peter thanking me for my submission but saying that it didn't really fit their line. I see his point. They tend towards mentalism and transposition stuff and this is more of the "story telling" sort of thing.
I think Im going to produce a first run myself by hand and see if I can sell them myself.

Elmwood Magic says they want to market tricks for magicians. You might want to submit your effect to them.

Fun Inc. is one of the largest manufacturers of magic in the world. Might want to try them out.

I don't think you understand how the magic business works. If you can find a person interested in marketing your effect. They will just pay you a modest sum. They will then take all the risk at marketing and selling the effect. Then again, they may buy your idea and it never go on the market at all. You really have not control over this, unless you manufacture the trick yourself and market it yourself.
If you remember the Adam's Dollar bill changer, the cardboard tube the you put a bill in, close the square tube and open it again and the spectator can remove different value bill. The person who invented it was 13 years old, I believe at the time. He received somthing around $50 for the trick. Adam's went on to sell thousands at a dollar a piece. That was in the 1960's. If your trick is great, they will just purchase the trick from you. Royality payments is not the standard in the magic world. Some special people have written books and worked out a deal like this, I believe. |

Thanks Bill, no, honestly I don't.
I come from the publishing space (book and software) where the publisher pays costs of production of the original up front as an advance against royalties on the back end. Personally I think it would make sense for a manufacturer to pay a few pennies per unit sold rather then an up front license fee as it lowers their risk, but every business has its own unique rules.

Cyberqat, you are trying to relate your experience with the magic industry. That is a mistake. If they like your idea and think it is great. They will give you a hundred dollars or so for the idea and prototype. There is no license fee, it is an out right purchase of your effect. At that point you are finished and can move on to creating something else. It may not even carry your name as the originator, as in my example of the Adam's trick. The young man was from Fort Wayne, IN. Remember they are buying and have the cash, you have an idea, and you should get it copyrighted as they can just make it once they get their hands on the material.
Magic Manufacturers are not going to track sales just to pay someone royalties. That is added expense of bookkeeping on their part. The do not want a lifetime relationship with idea people. It is kind of, make it yourself as many on the web do and manufacturer, market, sell the trick yourself or do as I have outlined. If they reject it you can still go ahead with your manufacturing process if you wish. The members have given you leads to persue, now it is up to you. Now this discussion has been about marketing and selling your idea. You say you have a packet trick, will it work in jumbo size as well? What research have you done that this effect has not been on the market already? Who have you consulted with to find out if this is a totally original idea, that can be marketed without stepping on other creators? Who have you shown the effect to that says is it a great idea and will be something that is sellable. Research has to be accomplished to find out if this trick can even be marketed. I know that companies like Fun Inc. employs people like Hank Moorehouse to research their new magic tricks around the world, before marketing items. |

You might also want to approach either The Magic Depot (Aaron Smith--who is on these forums), or Magic Makers, Inc. I deal with both of them, are they are easy to work with.
