Hi guys,
I'm trying to eliminate waste from my show, but I have a mouth coil routine that I really enjoy and that plays really well with audiences. I had a thought earlier today that perhaps these used mouth coils could be gathered and somehow reused in later shows for something else (not reused as a mouth coil). Also, I should mention that I usually don't give this out to kids; despite the fact that only a small portion of the mouth coil actually touches my mouth I still feel that this may not be appropriate. So, rather than sitting down and putting any of my own time or effort in (....yet, I only just had this idea), I put the question to you my friends; What can be done with used mouth coils? |

Could you put it in a change bag and use it as production item?
Or maybe do a baking the cake routine with a dove pan and use the tissue as 'fibre' or something like that. You can also do a cut and restored rope effect with it. Other than that, sell it as bor to a unlucky child. |

Well it depends on what kind of mouth coil you are using.
if its a cressy one the only thing that I would use it for and have in the past is to scoop it up and then produce a dove, bottle or what ever from the coil it you are using one of my mouth coils ok there not mine but they are the only one I use and sell you could possibly roll it back up my freind Fuki from Japan invented a killer tool for rewinding my throw coils. maybe it would work for these as well. again I only see scooping them up and producing some thing from them. good luck sam

At one time there were some reusable mouth coils on the market called Silver Casscade. These were a silver mylar material that took a few moments to re-roll after use. Not sure if they are still on the market or if they would fit in your routine.

I could see rewinding a throw coil but a mouth coil? I've tried to do that and it is almost impossible and very time consuming. I'm sure the Mylar would make it easier but are you really talking about the two strand mouth coil? If so I'd love to know how. perhaps I was approaching the puzzle from the wrong direction. -Mary Mowder |

How about a mouth coil that becomes a hat tear.
Or instead of bubble wrap, use it the next time you ship a package. Or throw it in the paper recycling bin, they don't care about the colors.

You could do a dove or silk cascade production if you're into that kind of Magic but I think in the end it's lovely garbage, recycle or give it to a child as a lei.
I respect where you're coming from Flymo. Waste should be eliminated. -Mary Mowder |

Thanks for the ideas so far guys. Rewinding them would be ideal; the ones I use are quite thin and I imagine wouldn't recoil very well. Silver Cascade sounds great except I need a mix of colours in the mouth coil.
I am going to brainstorm including it in a change back but may end up as packing material or recycled paper. Hoping this thread will generate an incredible idea though; I go through so many coils! |

You can use them for packing if you ever sell on Ebay, etc.

I've tried it, not fun. Takes a lot of time and doesn't get the same results as a new one.

I re use mine. I make my own bubble gum coils out of a hot pink rubbery tape like material I got from the hardware store - the coils never go in my mouth - I too am trying to be as eco friendly as possible in all areas of my life.

How do you rewind the double coil? I have done it but it took forever and as Leland said, it did not look so good. I know it would look better with the rubbery tape but the time involved is prohibitive without a better method.

I'm not too sure what a double coil is if that's directed at me. When I pull the coil it looks just like stretched bubblegum. It does take about 15-20 minutes to roll each one but they are made to the exact specifics I need.

A double coil is what a mouth coil is, not a simple roll up. I'm sorry this is not a real term.
I'll try to put in a photo but it's my first try at this. My apologies to who ever I copped this photo from. If the photo shows up you can see that it is two coils side by side that are connected to each other every inch or so. -Mary Click here to view/download attached file. |

I think the best use is to feed the used coil through a paper shredder and make confetti.

Use it for packing material for all the tricks you sell, that come off the "what are your top 5" threads,
when you realize the tricks are no better than what you were already doing.

The Silver Cascade is produced by Klamm Magic LLC. http://klamm-magic.com
I used mine as a mouth coil... I took out a stick of gum and unwrapped it from its foil. I would make a 'mistake' by putting the foil in my mouth and toss the gum away, then with a look of Oops, remove the foil which would cascade out of my mouth. The coils used to be sold with a rewinder which made for a very simple rewind. |
