They have actually performed this a number of times on television. I believe they performed it on their "home invasion" tv special.
I have that show on tape. . . .somewhere. |

FYI: There's a set of glass cups and balls up in Ebay right now. Price looks right. Hurry, only one or two days left.

Jason Latimer from the US just won the Grand Prix for close-up doing his clear glass cups and balls at FISM 2003. He left an audience of 2400 magicians thunderstruck. Never seen something like this before. Clever guy...
He told me it will be marketed soon.

No need to hurry on the eBay clear cups. They are overpriced anyway. You can find those glasses (that's what they are) at some garden supply shops as little flower pots and at some dishware stores...about 99 cents apiece if I recall correctly.

You can find the Penn and Teller routine on the DVD series called Mysteries of Magic. I believe it originally aired on PBS. Lots of good stuff on these DVDs, actually including interviews with Burger and McBride (who performs his 4 coin roll-down!).

Penn and Teller perform their versions, first with red plastic cups and then clear plastic cups, on an A and E (Arts and Entertainment) special which they host, taking a trip to Egypt in search of the ancient origins of the Cups and Balls--including "gali-gali" and heiroglyphics.
Of course, using specially-sold glass cups has the same effect but the totally-oppostie tone, style, and presentational statement intended by Penn and Teller in their use of truly ordinary, every-day and familiar objects... alleycat

What is the effect of the Clear Cups and Balls?

It is essentially the same as the effect of the regular cups and balls. Frankly, imho, P&T's version is pretty forgettable. Of all they do, it smacked of confusion more than magic, and wasn't that entertaining, although it has been awhile since I saw it.
I would love to see Jason Latimer's version, which is supposed to be excellent and deceptive. Cordially, tr |

The idea of P&T's version is that it is not meant as a trick but as an expose. It's confusing because P&T mean it to be confusing. They're basically showing you how the cups & balls is done, but they go so fast you still can't follow it. I wouldn't really consider it a trick 'per se', but a performance piece.

Marko is right. When they perform it they do it first with regular cups and then repeat it with clear cups. What is very confusing to the audience is both of them are handling the cups and balls so you have four hands working in synchonization, Because of that, this expose is not that revealing because of the spectators utter confusion watching the action.

I understood their intent alright. However confusion, intentional or not, is not magic and performance piece or not, it just wasn't that great imho, as performance art or as magic either one. If you want performance art, go with The Blue Man Group, they're way better at it. Some of P&T's stuff IS great, imho, but I just didn't care for this.
I still would like to see a performance of Jason Latimer's cups and balls. Up til now Tommy Wonder's routine has been "it" for me in the C&B category. I have been working on a two cup idea where one cup is opaque and the other clear but while I have several ideas so far, and a couple of good bits of handling, it just hasn't gelled. Cordially, tr |

.... I didn't like the standard Cups and Balls routine so I got some of those cups with mirrors on them.

Penn and Teller are amazing!
Even though they do it with clear cups, it is still amusing and hard to follow. |

I just recently saw the clear cups video and was amazed by it. I also love their showtime special and really support what they do.
