Mike:
I think you ask a very intersting question. how can you perform a bill in lemon type of an effect and make it really more interesting for the children watching. I would first like to point out that you do not have to use a dollar or even a lemon to get the same effect. Study what the effect of the trick is and then try to duplicate that same type effect with something the children can better relate to. Any ideas on this?

The chosen sport item (hockey puck, miniature bowling pin, baseball, etc...) in the nesting box. The chosen Hot Wheel car in a balloon. The chosen flower in a vase.

PB: Do you do this watch to nest of tins for a children's party? Who was your intended audience?

Thanks for the additional information. I guess this could work for kids, but I would hope that you use a lot of comedy by play and funny patter to make it more exicitng for the children watching it. Can you tell me a little more about the routine you use and the patter for the effect? Thanks.

Thanks for the thoughtful reply. I still would not do it but I understand your reasons for feeling the other way. Best, Steve

HI Kyle, the routine started out as a variation of David Ginns routine which appears on his "It's about time video" and over the years (I had one of the pre launch copys) it has evolved from that. the routine plays for about 10 mins (this is long for me)it uses lot's of wands, silly glasses ext. With regards funny patter it comes down to how you define "funny patter" I do not tell jokes, miscall things or use story patter. I do however tease myself and my helpers a hell of a lot... IE I might ask a boy his age (5) ask a girl her age (6) I then ask the girl if she likes younger men(I have answers for both replies)however assuming she say's "yes" I look to the boy's eyes give him a big thumbs up then look to her eyes then to the audience. I might even move them to stand next to each other, move away double take and say "no kissing" My aprouch to presenting audience partisipation effects for kids tends to be mostly conspiratorial (together we will try and ....... ) the drama , comedy ext comes from that partnership journey to accomplish the desired result Phillip |

Nice idea and thank you for sharing some of the presentation with me. I am now seeing how the effect can be made fun for kids by the use of coemdy props, dressing the kids up and funny bits of business that get the kids involved. I think the important thing here is that your trying to do the effect in a manner that the children will enjoy and not as a straight forward sahowing of skill. This would often times make the kids fall asleep from boredom. It also seems like you have found a character and a style that works for you.

Bill in Lemon is a great trick but a little too much for young kids. Yes, it would be appreciated by eight yer old and up but I think a version akin to the "Torn and Restored Handkerchief" ala Lance Burton, where there is no handkerchielf so the kid's shoe is used, takes the bill in lemon theme and puts it squarely into the kid show arena.
I wouldn't do the burned part, at least not with an open flame, although having the shoe burned up by your powerful magic would be okay. As for kids having more sense than to copy a magician weilding a knife, you are right, kids do have more sense than we give them credit for. Having said that, an angry parent and their lawyer may not have the same amount of sense.

Frank brings up some good points here. I think that you can taker the Bill in Lemon idea of effect of the trick and bring it back into the realm of kids show performance by changing hwo it is done and what props are being used. The Shoe idea is a nice one. It is essentially the same type of an efect as bill in lemon, but done with items and a storyline the kids will have more fun with.
I also like the remark that kids are smarter then we give them credit for. That is very true, but also, parents and lawyers may not see it the same way you do. That is why I never like to take chances. it is safer for me to just not use them in my performance. In that way I make everyone happy. =)

I also perform this at all stand-up and birthday shows regardless of age.
It plays great because it is a full-length routine with all the props, etc. Boy, that knife (that comes with the trick) is VERY sharp. Keep it AWAY from the kids. It could cut your thumb OFF if you let a kid open the lemon. Quote: On 2003-07-30 20:21, Ron Reid wrote:

I still would find that trick boring for children unless you really gear it more on their level, make it funny. use comedy props and change the story. I also never ever use sharp objects or fire in my shows. I just personally do not like to perform anything a child could get hurt from if they mimic what the magician did. Just my opinion is all.

As a different option for a kids show you could do the effect "Bill-oon" by Mark Jenest.
Instead of Bill-to-Lemon, it's Bill-to-Balloon which is more kid-centric. The effect is on Mark's "Miracles While You Wait" video. No Knife, No mess, No Lemon, Just a bag of balloons that don't rot. I just did this effect for kids/adults at a show this weekend several times and it went over very well.
