I am a 53-year-old Special Education teacher trying to get into magic.
I have been dabbling in magic for over 40 years; I've done the occasional restaurant magic gig, a private party, a magician in a murder mystery group, and numerous childrens' birthday parties when I was a teenager. Now we are hit with the worst recession/depression since 1929. Restaurant gigs have all but dried up, and I have no contacts for private parties. I am also in SAG, AFTRA, and Actors Equity, Honorary Withdrawal. What is the first rung of the ladder for me to get into doing magic? My budget is small, and I own a lot of trick coins and playing cards. Bato William

Also, go to the local library and look for books on marketing 'speakers', etc. 'Magic' as a performance craft is simply a 'product' and you need to look into basic marketing skills to sell your product. There are a ton of books available online also. Check Amazon and READ the REVIEWS! But, as much as possible look to your local libraries.
Best,

You might also try to get some sponsorship from businesses, civic groups etc. Magic for special ed folks could be very useful, and with a few sponsors, they get the exposure, people who can't afford it get the show and you get a paid gig ...

Recession or not - people are still paying for what they want!
And "making them want you" is all about marketing. A hard lesson I'm having to learn! Check out the Tricky Business forum for more about making things happen. Then again, if you're just wanting to perform paid or not, the opportunities are endless. (As in, once you get locked in as the "free" guy, the offers to perform free are endless!) Ed |

While you are at the library ask if they have already booked their Summer Reading Magic Show.
Either they have or you have just opened the door to a recurring gig.

Taking a tip from Wayne Fox you might consider viewing gigs, less as a way for making money and more as a venue for advertising yourself to people who have money (so don't perform in McDonalds)....but then I only know what others have told me.
