Jim Riser also had a solid cup routine, and used to manufacture a solid cup that went with the routine.

Hmm...I was just about to go to my copy of the Ganson book to look this up. Is there a better source?

There may be a more recent source, such as the L&L books, but the Ganson book was the source for a long time.
PM'ed you about it. Quote:

I made plugs for my cups. I used the morrissey cups and stole the (inside) plugs like any other load.
They were a relatively loose compression fit, but when you turn over the cup and is is plugged or solid, it was cool. I made the plugs out of brass.

Not predating the earliest mentioned here, but in the early 1980's, the late Richard Rau fooled the daylights out of me with a solid wood "chop cup". He had constructed the routine specifically to fool magicians with various ruses such as, at one time double banging the cup to get the ball to "appear", and later deliberately allowing a flash of the final load (which was pure genius because not only did he have to flash, he had to flash and falsely load, and then reload immaculately for the subsequent appearance later). The final hook, which I cleanly bit, was to ask me as a magician friend, what I thought of the routine. When I told him what I had seen, he pushed the cup toward me, and said, "Show me what you mean."
When I picked up the cup, my brain cells began to explode. There was never any switch at any point. It was not a routine for laymen, but it was never intended to be.

I just learned from one of the people who visits various c&b related web sites that Riser did produce a series of solid cups as early as 1973, which would predate the Wolfsberger material.
You can find this on his web site.

Bill, I had no idea that Jim was producing these so early. I had a look at his site, and I note: 1) the instruction sheet for the solid cup certainly looks 1970-ish, but bears no date that I can see; (by the way, it's a great routine) 2) the "Catalog c. 1973" that he reproduces on his website does advertise the solid cup, however, 3) it also lists his address at the bottom of each page, giving his zip + 4 zipcode. According to wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ZIP_code#ZIP.2B4 the post office didn't start using the zip + 4 codes until 1983. Odd.
As for Takagi's routine, Richard Kaufman wrote: "This, the first solid cup routine is one of my personal favorites from takagi's repertoire. It was originally published in English in 1977....Prior thoughts along these lines include Eric Lewis' Solid Okito Box and the solid cone climax for Dai Vernon's `Ball and Cone'". So he seems to be saying that a) there was a solid cone ending to the Vernon routine, b) that predated the Takagi routine, and c) it was Eric Lewis'? I have no source for the solid cone ending of the Vernon routine, and no idea when Takagi might have published his routine in Japanese. Oh, and the Bokk of John, Verse 2 is copyright 1980.

That tallies with what I had suspected.
I'll have to check the material in the Vernon Chronicles. Posted: Feb 13, 2011 6:26pm I think that if I had mentioned that the date I saw Gary Wolfsberger perform his routine was 1973, these instructions would be ca 1972. Not accusing. Just saying.

I've also seen the name Lawrence Steinhauer (with many variations on the name) connected to this plot. I believe I first read it in an old issue of Linking Ring. But I don't remember more than that.

BTW, I searched all of my Vernon material and didn't find anything. If anyone has a source for Vernon's solid cone climax, please let me know. I need the date.
Lawrence (or Laurence) Steinhauer was mentioned in the Paul Harris description.

FYI: From the May, 1977 Genii:
Quote: Second booklet of Gary Wolfsberger is MANIPULATION WITH THE CONE AND BALL which he does seated for close-up. Ball vanish, appearance, change to large, and finally a large ball. For the kicker, he hands out the cone — and, it is solid wood! A routine I'd like to see. He also states the trick first appeared in "Faber's Catalog No. 7, about 1911". More information please! Also, that it reappeared at the Seattle World's Fair in 1939!

Just a clarification. The trick that appeared in Faber's catalog was not with a solid cone, but a hollow one.

I read on a wall in Egypt that Dedi used a solid rock instead of a cup.

Thanks, Bill. The phrasing there was a bit ambiguous, so I appreciate the clarification. I presume the same goes for the 1939 reference as well, though that may be a bit harder to verify.
