I would have to say I'm one of those who was entirely blown away after watching your Mental Miracles video Bob. In that video you answered the same question of how you present yourself. Your reasoning for keeping the "mind reader" moniker was a complete 180 from the Banachek-style explanation of "5 senses to create the illusion of a 6th." In other words, your decision to keep the "mind reader" title made 110% more sense than the 5 senses to create the illusion of a 6th reasoning. Let me elaborate on this a bit.
Let's take a look at Banachek whom arguably single-handily lead the "revolution" for mentalists to move away from taking and keeping the title of "mind reader" or other similar titles. Now, MOST people learns of this from reading Banachek's books and watching his 4-disc video series. What MOST people have not had the pleasure of is to actually see Banachek perform a full on show. If you were to watch Banachek's show, he does indeed use his now famous disclaimer BUT there is such little emphasis on it and he also hits the audience with such perplexing feats of mentalism, he might as well not have a disclaimer. Firstly, what he is doing completely contradicts the disclaimer. The disclaimers soon appear to be a ploy or red herring used in order to hide the fact that he is the real deal. I am fully aware that this is most probably NOT the case for Banachek and he uses to disclaimer most probably out of moral and ethical obligations (self imposed or otherwise) but in the context of his show, the disclaimer may as well be nonexistent. So, what is the situation in which we are essentially left with if using the 5 senses to create the illusion of a 6th or any similar approach? Well, if you have a solid show and doing your job properly, the approach or disclaimer is going to become nonexistent because for most of the audience, it's going to be perceived as being completely real. Face it, unless we sit them all down and expose our trickery step by step, most of your audience is going to accept it as real (and sometimes, even if you do break down a effect for them, it's safe to assume that they still won't get it). Bob's approach is closer to being honest with your audience then the 5 senses to create the illusion of a 6th approach. Bob simply tells his audience that he's a mind reader and that he reads their minds or thoughts. NONE of what Bob says can be contested. He LITERALLY READS what they are thinking. |

Normally I wouldn't post a review of my own act, but I couldn't resist posting the following (which appeared on a private mentalism forum) because it directly addresses an issue that was raised in this thread.

Bob, as a relative newcomer to magic and mentalism late in life, I'll just jump in to say thanks for all the thoughts and guidance in this thread and others -- then hop back into the shadows of lurkerhood before the next skirmish breaks out

When I was learning cold reading I took a few pages from a webster book " quick and effective cold readings" and went into a bar where some of my female friends hang out. I told them it was fake then tried it on them. They all believed it was real. And their jaws dropped. My jaw dropped too when I saw their responses.
I wasn't even any good but they still thought I could read minds. Very recently last week I started offering readings again. I did a lady's night. None of them had a good word to say about the local mediums. They weren't impressed with them. By the time I left a couple of hours later they thought I was real and were blown away. The place was buzzing. Not only that they are selling another night next month. This is the UK. There is a real hunger for a real psychic. Even although I gave them a logical explanation that separated me from all the local mediums and nutjobs. I told them they have all the amswers in their own minds all I am going to do is help you pull them out. I have been avoiding this road for years instead teaching corporates persuasion and sales etc. A much more respectable pass time. But recession has sort of killed it dead. This is a lot more fun... |

I'd like to quote this "we saw his show twice, just to see if we could catch him out (I'll admit it!) -- but we could not." And of course you can't, because Bob Cassidy is a real mind reader. So what about his books? Well they teach you very clever methods and tremendously ingenious principles that he's created to disguise the real fact...
Bob I'm with phantomtollbooth, I thank you for all the knowledge you've shared in your books. I'm glad to be the owner of one copy of "The Artful Mentalism of Bob Cassidy" and I've learned a lot from it, well, from you. I'll come back to this book when I finish the one I'm studying right now. Well, thank you again, and please keep sharing your thoughts with us |

I posted the following in another thread that was deleted for reasons unrelated to it. In the context of this thread, I think it still worth thinking about today:

Bob,
I love Tarbell, and would not be if not for him but that bit has bothered me since the first time reading it at 16 or 17. However I can agree with you posting it and Tarbells intent. Best Wishes, J im H.o.A-X

Hi Jim-
With some, probably similar, reservations I basically have always accepted Tarbell's position as a realistic one. Dr. Crow (in the original post), however, has essentially stated my view as it has evolved since I first read Tarbell so many ages ago. Good thoughts, Bob |
