I believe this is a blip on the timeline that will pass as prosperity returns - and prosperity always returns. My local business has been booming as more people choose Staycations over Vacations - schools and day cares choose in-house field trips to away trips - malls, neighborhoods and businesses are desperate for novel ways to draw people away from their Netflicks, PlayStations and Cable programs.
So, for me at least, the glass is still half-full. This is where the creative mind seeks out new ways to push ahead and through these trying times. Don't allow news like this to pull you down. Use it to motivate you into springing past all the half-empty types.
How you leave others feeling after an Experience with you becomes your Trademark.

Ray,
I'm about as afraid as you are. I haven't done magic since Saturday at an Indian restaurant (with a stage)!. This is 6:19 AM Monday morning. I don't feel out of work. But then I only have half a century in professional magic and 52 years in the professional entertainment industry. Venues change because THEY fail. Magicians keep working! Currently I am booked through November. I'll bet I'm still working when Obama gets fired. Bob Sanders Magic By Sander PS --- I'm also an old retired university graduate professor (Marketing, Management and Finance) who does not depend on Forbes for expert advice. Note that this article is really about changes in venues. Government barriers to business in the USA are never mentioned. Venues must change. (Remember when we worked skating rinks, National Guard Armories, bowing alleys, and family camp grounds? Perhaps you may even remember when education took place in public schools? Smart money moves. The venues go with it. Don't be surprised if someday you perform on PRIVATE Hospital Ships!) Lucy and I had a six-piece live orchestra here at the ranch for our Valentines party. Private venues may be replacing public ones. Great! Government has to stop at the door. Even their over regulation has limits. Smart money simply moves. Smart money is who hires magicians! Not Forbes! |

Do the people writing about us not working get their information from magicians? No. They go by what other things they see. They think like this: "A family cannot afford their trip to DisneyLand this year because they are $500 short. Therefore they don't have the money for other things."
Maybe other things that cost as much. $500 short could mean they have $2000 for other things. Movies, parties, dinner out, etc. Not having enough for one thing does not mean you cannot do anything else.

In 2009 my business went right into the toilet, 2010 business was a bit better, and so far in 2011 my phone has been ringing more. If the rest of 2011 is the same as the beginning I should have a pretty good year.

What a ridiculous article...I find these kind of things pointless. According to a jobs researcher, live performances have fallen out of fashion. The two are not related - do you research jobs, or dictate the entertainment preferences of the public?
It also states a 61% decline...according to whom? What is the number based on? Show me the study...stating an arbitrary number is meaningless. Must have been a slow news day at Forbes.

At last year's Future Business Leaders of America convention, I listened to a lecture from a former record producer and he said the reason music today is crap is b/c the industry is in a transition period where the power is being wrestled away from the major record labels for good. Once this transition is done, he predicted that now that the artist will be in the drivers seat, there will be more good music from more good musicians preforming in more intimate venues.
Even though we fortunatly don't have to deal with record labels, I feel that if his predictions are true, that will have a positive trinkle down effect on magic, with all the new venues and greater acceptance of the independent artist. And his predictions show that arts that are once considered dead will always rise again. |

I think that's a fair prediction. Will record companies still have power? You bet. But speaking as a musician who put out two records with my band (and no label) I can say that, much like independent films, the advances in technology have made it increasingly easy for someone with a little knowledge and not much cash to get their hands on professional equipment. We recorded our records in a "professional" studio, but it was still a converted garage. Thanks to social networking and more products aimed at the "prosumer" market (professional consumer,) this stuff is well within the reach of the artists, at least in my experience. I was on a film set a couple of years ago - a feature that was in theaters nationwide - and the director was cutting scenes between takes on the exact same editing software I have on my home computer. He was editing a multi-million dollar feature film, released by a major studio, on a laptop. Sure it was so he could see how the scene was coming together, it's not as if it was the final edit, but it shows you how the market is shifting.
Now to just figure out how to get more magicians on the radio
