I love watching buskers. If I come across one, I'll watch his whole routine several times. I admire the way they put themselves out there for the whole world to see and enjoy. I do lots of shows, but would never even consider busking. I think it takes a different mentality and completely different dynamics than a "stage" performer.
However, many of your points also apply to the full time stage/parlor/birthday party performer. When I tried to refinance my house the reply was "self-employed??" Can you show us your paycheck stubs? HA! I do think your comment about be "devalued" is correct. Street people are typically homeless or "bums", and buskers are automatically assumed to be part of this group. Even though busker's magical skills are usually finely honed due to the environment they perform in, they still don't get the credit they deserve. And location - yep, busker's work outdoors. Many parlor magician won't even consider an outdoor gig. I do one every once in a while, but I don't like it! Busking is more than just street performing, it's a complete way of life. Jim |

I've been an Insurance Agent, A Car Salesman, & wanted.
One of the last living 10-in-one performers. I wanted to be in show business the worst way, and that was it.

I like Jimmy's attitude. That he is a full time professional magician and that if he doesn't have any thing else booked he goes to the street. The street can support you, teach you, destroy you, etc. It is always there, waiting if you need it though.

Devalued as a performer...........unfortunately that's true until the other performers see how well you can rock a crowd due to that "street" experience.
learning a new routine? work it out in the streets |

Wow, This has been an incredible post. there's a lot of truth in these words, pay attention young buskers......the words of experience are sounding off and they tell nothing but the truth. The biggest point I can add is that you have to treat this like a business or there is no business. I love busking but I also enjoy the other avenues of magic but there is something about busking that just draws me to it, every where I go it's usually fun and profitable, then there are those times when I think, I should have stayed home!!!! Fortunatey they don't happen very often but be prepared for them also.

I've never been a busker either, but can see how some of the ideas in the first post would make sense. However, if you have the passion and drive to do it full time then you'll be more successful than someone who lacks that self belief.

They would have to have that self belief. It is a tough life and most of the buskers I know are broke. It is not because they don't earn money. They do. And sometimes do very well. But they can't hold on to the money and salt it away for the tough times of which there are many. And there comes a time when their bodies can't take it any more since we all get older. And then they wake up and realise they have nothing to show for it. I think in addition to self belief and talent they probably need to learn some money management as well.
