I found an interesting article on the MSNBC site: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/28697866/ns/health-behavior/ . It's entitled "Study: If you touch it, you will buy it. Simply stroking an object in a store can make you willing to pay."
Of course this has immediate usefulness for bricks and mortar magic shops and those with booths at conventions to sell more merchandise to people like us. But it got me to thinking. Can the concept help you book more shows? If you're at the level of your career where you commonly talk directly to the show buyer of a venue of course you'll come armed with your favorite close-up, impromptu and pseudo-impromptu effects. And of course one of them will leave your card in the booker's hand. But what else could you leave him or her with? Perhaps something more interesting, unusual, or personal? Something they'll show their friends would be ideal. I don't have any answers myself but I think it's a point worth pondering. Get them involved and touching one or more objects. Leave them with something in addition to your business card and more memorable. And of course you should still try to get the booking on the first meeting. I've done a number of posts on the psychology of persuasion, a topic I find fascinating. Understanding it isn't only useful during your show, it can help you get the gig in the first place.

Yeah, that's what she said. Lots of guys with buyer's remorse. "psychology of persuasion" I think you are on to something! Having the spec. "feel" an item is a lock.

What if you carried a "power-stone" (the little, colored stones available at most hobby stores, Dollar Tree, Dollar General, etc.) and demonstrated the power of the mind and NLP suggestion to convince people that such things actually have power? Then, demonstrate, using the same techniques used by those selling "Power Bracelets." Leave them with a stone (about 3 to 5 cents worth) and one of your cards. The possibilities are captivating. Thanks for the post. |

And here's the PM I sent to you Michael,
Hi Michael, That's exactly the kind of thing I was thinking of. You can buy polished stones and various kinds of crystals by the pound from lapidary dealers (stone suppliers for hobbyists and flea-market sellers) (boot sales if you're British, swamp meets if you're in the US West.) People (especially woman) eat this stuff up. BTW I hope you made a post in addition to your PM to me. Others will find it just as useful as my post, I'm sure. Regards, Rocky

What about leaving a small wooden box sealed with a padlock? You may tell your future client that you'll let him keep that box until the day of the show or that you'll come back later for it if he doesn't want to book.
What is inside the box? Maybe a prediction? Use your imagination! I hope you like this idea |

Larry Becker gave a gift of a "crystal" to a lady as part of his close-up mental magic routine in Stunners (I THINK it's in that massive book). Very professional...
