One of my appearing candles has a problem. The bottom cap has suddenly become so loose that it cannot hold a bobby pin to keep the candle collapsed. The bobby pin just comes off with the bottom cap, and, of course, the candle opens! I use the bobby pin to hold the candle closed before I steal it some minutes into my act. I've tried caps from all my other candles, and they are all now too loose in this particular candle. Is there a way to make the fitting tighter?! I hope so! Please advise. I have an 8:30 am show tomorrow morning I'm going to use it for. Thank you!
Jim

My first thought was to cut a ring from the neck of a small balloon and see if that could be used to wedge the cap in place. Or, maybe a small piece of cloth tape. You could probably heat it up and stick something in it while it cools to widen it for a more permanent solution.
If all else fails, fill it with fluid, glue it in place, and store it in a Ziploc bag until your showtime - you'll just have to get another after. Good luck!

Micheal,
Good ideas. Thank you! Maybe I could just cut a small circle of balloon and use that sort of like the wadding used in musket loading rifles? I'll try it. Jim

I would get one while they are available. Fantasio has discontinued the production and closed his manufacturing shop as of last year. He still has some stock, but there will be no more made. He has been ripped off so much (including his directions) that he decided it was time to close the production down.

Thank you, Richard. I didn't know that. I haven't really been aware of other brands. Darn it. I will buy a bunch.
Other people must have had this same problem before me. I wonder if there isn't an accepted way to deal with it. Jim

Jim, there is another method, but your time schedule is to soon. There is a wire holder in one of the Fantasio books by David Ginn. It might be in the hard bound book as well by L&L Publishing, but I cannot check currently.
I would just wrap the plug with scotch tape and force it in. That should work as a temp solution. |

Bill,
Thanks. That will take care of me for tomorrow. However, I am VERY interested in this wire holder! I've been wanting some other way to holds them for steals. I will email David Ginn and ask him. Great lead! Jim Posted: Feb 22, 2011 1:20am I checked Daytona and all I saw were metal candles, both appearing and vanishing. One thing that sounds interesting about them is that they use a tip of a real candle to light rather than a fluid well. Didn't see any plastic candles at Daytona except for Fantasio's. I was watching him last night on the Sullivan DVD. I'm such a fan of his. Jim

It is definitely confirmed from Fantasio himself. Levent showed me a photo of Fantasio with the last of his stock boxed up to go to Murphy's Magic. I immediately wrote him and got a reply. He is out of the wands but still has a few candles and canes.
I am trying to stock up so that I have a few ahead for a few years. This is almost like when Walsh stopped making the canes. I had to discontinue the items. Fantasio told me that they have not only ripped off his product but they have copied his directions verbatim. Distributors probably have stock enough for a year or so but then that is it. I am sorry to see him retired for selfish reasons but he has certainly earned it. I can think of few professionals who have had such a wonderful career as a nightclub act, illusion show, single act, a great magic manufacturing and being blessed with a wonderful wife and family for so many years. Enjoy your retirement my friend. I look forward to spending many more years talking with you. Richard

Wow, another disappointing discovery. As Richard said, he has certainly earned his retirement, but I am still saddened.

Thinking about Fantasio's revolutionary use of the plastic material for his products, I had to smile after reading the following quote from William Woodfield's MAGICANA> A Trade Paper for Magicians, the May, 1946 edition:
"DEPT. OF GOOD IDEAS: A roll of 120 film makes a swell vanishing cane when the usually discarded paper backing is rerolled with the black side out..." Good ideas seem to keep getting re-invented all the time, don't they? Julie |

The only problem is finding 120 mm film. BTW, having worked with film for years, the film is not the proper thickeness or tensile strength to work right.
As I understand, Fantasio got the idea for the plastic items from a convenience store where the roll up plastic kept the front of the shelf full. Richard

If his instructions are even being copied it must be an overseas item.

Yes, He has closed the factory almost two years ago. Murphy's and some other distributors have a pretty good inventory but that is all there is.
