Hi Jamie,
First off I wanted to let you know that I'm a big fan of your magic and your Send Wonder initiative. Your creative enthusiasm and optimistic attitude inspire me. Now, what venues do you recommend for a magician who is more introverted? Is the stage a better fit because of its anonymity? Or is walk around a better fit because of its intimacy? For me practicing magic in solitude is a great joy, whereas performing it is exhausting. What venues do you prefer? Are you more introverted or extroverted, in your own assessment? Several of my friends and I followed your Send Wonder Campaign. From our side of the show, it seemed like a great success, and was very entertaining to be involved in. From your side of the show, how did the Send Wonder campaign turn out? How did it end? Is there anything more in store of the same kind of participatory scavenger hunt variety? I really like the notion of the long-term involvement of the audience that occurred with that campaign. More would be most welcome. Some of my favorite tricks to perform are of the intellectual variety. I find that those suit a more intellectual crowd, such as computer programmers. Other people in the crowd get bored because they don't appreciate the stuff that's happening. They're into more visual magic in which something happens (i.e. Lance Burton's dove magic). My own preference is for highly technical magic, or magic that requires a person to follow a rather complex plot (e.g. The Birthday Book). What do you recommend for me? I find the visual magic to be a chore to learn, whereas I find the abstract magic or technical magic (e.g. a poker deal) more personally satisfying. Is there a niche for a performer like me? Warmth, Shaun Luttin Here is a 29-minute live performance of mine: https://youtu.be/lq2Rj1uf05M I used to be quite sensitive to criticism; I am much less so now; so, please do criticize my technique, presentation, and posts. It helps me to grow, and I promise to take responsibility and not to be defensive. |

Hiya Shaun!
It's always great to hear from you! The "Send Wonder" campaign really changed my life- my approach to art, learning about how the little things we do can affect people in huge ways. It was beyond awesome for me. And, as a result, it continues! I haven't officially announced it yet, but here's as good as place as any... http://blog.sendwonder.com/p/one-inch.html With regards to Stage versus Walkaround~ I think Walkaround is the best place to bring out the best of you (in the beginning) simply because you have more opportunities to fail & recover. If you have a crappy stage gig- that can crush you. But if you have one blah Walkaround group, you just move on to the other. There's more opportunity for success, I think. And as for venues for technical work- that's always the tough one, isn't it? Where do we go to rock out some lengthy complex card work? Maybe some people reading this can chime in, as I'd love to hear the thoughts of everyone here. I personally think that a living room show might be a great place- something that you organize yourself. That's where I would start... ~jamie
