Admit it- we've all got too many tools. I thought my workshop was complete for the longest time, though I wondered if, perhaps, I should consider getting a band saw.
Suddenly, though, I find I'm doing some metalworking, and have a need for a bench grinder (to stick a polishing wheel on) and a bench sander (to help make wooden forms.) Now I'm going to be adding a "grinder cart" to my portable stations, along with my router table on wheels, and my circular saw/drill press table. I'm even pondering the possibilities of a metal lathe (and I don't even own a wood lathe!) In the meantime, I've been "turning" wands by sticking aluminum rod stock in a power drill and rotating it against a dremel with a grinding wheel locked in a bench vise. (On a side note, though aluminum's pretty easy to shape, it really clogs up dremel grinder bits, as well as standard metal files. Anyone have a decent solution? None of the hardware stores near me have any files designed for aluminum.) Back to the original question, though- what's the next tool you're getting for your workshop?

My ulitmate tool for my workshop would be someone/thing to get the dust out... and keep the little bits off the floor.

I want a second 23 ga. pin gun. I am tired of carrying the one I have back and forth between the two shops.

The list gets longer every day. My need for a router has its own thread. I also want a spot welder, am intrigued with a power coat system, have desperate need for good dust collection system (current one consists of a broom), just bought a new rotary tool when mine crapped out, and am basically now just waiting to see what tool is going to quit working next!
Interestingly enough though, my more prominent recent purchases, have consisted of a kerosene heater and a snow shovel.

My wife would probably do something nasty to me if I didn't have my shop vac plugged into any of my power tools when I use them. Sharing a workshop with a garage can get messy, especially if you're inclined to keep extra pots and pans, and other such things, in your garage.

Yeah, actually I do have a shop vac that stays connected to my belt sander. Controlling the fine dust is very helpful.

Not a "power tool" per se, but a powerful tool nonetheless -I'm looking to buy a new blacksmith's anvil in the next 6 months or so... The small metalworker's vice/anvil just isn't up to the tasks I need it for these days.

For me it's a toss up between a single phase plasma cutter, induction forge, or 25# LG power hammer.
Gaddy, check out anvilfire.com for help on finding a good true anvil.

I use very few power tools, most of my work is traditional,so deserves traditional tooling.
I don't even own a router,I have a moulding plane....I'm soooo 1600's That said,I'd love a new grinder.Mine has no safety plates, and the rests are tiny. Then again,I only use it for sharpening tools and shaping cutters.Do I really need one,or is it just a longing for a new toy? Ray.
What do we want?

Oscillating spindle sander. That way I won't have to use a sanding drum on the drill press any more.

Just bought a light wood lathe off ebay. Want to turn some cups and wands, with out shelling out a bunch. Scroll saw and metal break will be next up.
Would love to have all the indrustrial strength tools, but Ive got to work within the budget and shop space. Mulee |

I'm with George an oscillating spindle sander. Been too much trouble to put the sanding disc on the table saw and back off and then the belt sander then the files for inside curves. Enough. A second router to leave mounted under table and yes, Michael, a spot welder would be nice to form brass cylinders. That or a rivet machine, no, not pop rivets. In the mean time I will get a rivet rolling set punch. Micheal, got to laugh over your last two needed tools.

A Bridgeport milling machine.
I also want a 1965 Ford Mustang Fastback. Now that's a power tool. |
