I recently bought an iPhone and downloaded the iSoda app (similar to iBeer, which is more famous but less appropriate for family shows).
I have now added a routine called "3 quick tricks" to my birthday party show where one of them is the iSoda effect. It seems to be going over very well. I am wondering if anyone else does magic with their iPhone/iPad in a paid show? If so, which effects do you do? Vijay

I saw a close-up guy doing one a month or so ago. It didn't play very well. People couldn't see...although it may have been the performer and not the effect. I have always sort of assumed that it was more for friends and family than pro events. Maybe I'm wrong...but I don't think I would perform one at a paid show.

If you were to do a phone trick for me I will make my excuses and leave. If I was paying, I would probably stuff the phone down your throat. What's wrong with doing magic?

These are kids we are talking about - every kid loves watching cool iPhone apps. Also it is done as a throw away bit in between magic routines.

I made my own phone trick about a decade ago. I'd have someone select a card and the phone would read their mind and show up the 5 of clubs. They'd claim they had picked the 4 of clubs and I'd rub one of the pips off with my thumb. It used to get great reactions as a walk-around trick. Then they invented touch screen etc and the trick lost all its impact. It was also before you could do that much with a phone I had to make a gif and upload it to a wap site, stuff most people couldn't do at the time.
I suppose the points from that story are: People are pretty clued about phones and apps so you'd have to have something unique (that probably included other props or techniques as well as your phone) Phone tricks are really only good for walkaround use an ipad onstage I once did a trick with a McCombical deck,a laptop, a projector and a vacuum cleaner which went down a storm. I've only done it twice though as it had obvious set up limitations. I have been looking into creating something using a pad though. |

If I saw an iphone app when I was kid my brain would've exploded.
I agree the apps like soda and stuff are common place and not very exciting but with some imagination and writing (Iforce's facility for setting up your own predictions has limitless possibilities) you could come up with something fantastically original. I get the feeling your not embracing this technology though, Tony, so each to his own. However does your experience count for much if you've never tried it? |

So I am not judging in the dark. The Nintendo DS brought out a magic game, full of neat tricks. But while it was fun for one person on his own, it was not something suitable for a professional engagement. With electronics the suspicion is always rightly there that this is just being done by chips and pixels. Using physical props eliminates this. It's like watching special effects in a movie. Good fun, but nowhere near the impact of seeing something live, because everyone knows that it is not real. I think if you were to bring out a phone during a show you would immediately be marked down as an anorak. Just my view, I know. But there is stronger material out there. How about Jay Sankey's pushing a phone into an inflated balloon? Real magic with a phone.

I've seen a video of Jay Sankey's effect and it wasn't one of my favourites. It seemed obvious to me but maybe I just had my magicians head on.
I agree there are problems with technology. I remember seeing a documentary saying that David Nixon used camera tricks and special effects when they first came out and they weren't best recieved. I also think the online version of the princess card trick makes a daft gimmick out of what can be a beautiful effect using actual cards now solvable by anyone with a decent memory or a back browser button. However I don't think it is all so black and white and one can't say all phone tricks are bad as if you look into them a little further some are extremely versatile, can be edited into something personal and original and also you can incorporate them into tricks with other components (for example there's a coin in your hand you tap it with your phone and it's inside the screen then you pull it through the screen). Anoraky? Maybe but nerds are cool now. Geek chic. One idea I had for a phone was to record half a conversation with your puppet and memorise the other half. Then video-calling your puppet. Maybe at the end of the call the puppet shows a prediction you have previously forced. Or ask a child to think of their favourite animal at the zoo and try to draw a picture of it on your phone. Leave your phone face down on the table let them tell you their favourite animal turn over the phone and there's your picture. |
